UNN Cut off Mark for Medicine and Surgery

As soon as UNN conducts her Post UTME Screening exercise for the year, the admission committee begins to compile names of successful candidates for the Primary (or Merit) Admission List.

However, before the list comes out, the departments release cut off marks for admission into various courses. These departmental cut off marks tell you your admission chances.

What is the Meaning of UNN Departmental Cut off mark?

UNN departmental cut off marks are minimum aggregate scores candidates reach before they can qualify for admission into various courses in UNN.

So every candidate whose aggregate score is exactly or above the departmental cut off mark will gain admission in the merit list.

Note, however, that UNN cut off marks are not constant. They vary every year.

So UNN departmental cut off marks can go up or down depending on certain factors like…

  • carrying capacity of the department (i.e. the number of candidates it can hold).
  • the number of candidates vying for the department in the year in question.
  • the overall performance of all the candidates vying for the department.

So whatever the cut off mark, it is normally out in the departments before the publication of the admission list.

What is UNN Cut off Mark for Medicine and Surgery 2022?

UNN merit cut off mark for Medicine and Surgery is 319.

The table below gives the UNN Medicine and Surgery cut off marks for catchment areas. This is in addition to the merit cut off mark.

Catchment Areas UNN Cut off Mark for Medicine and Surgery

S/No Medicine and Surgery UNN Cut Off Mark
1. Merit 319
2. Enugu State 317
3. Anambra State 316
4. Imo State 217.5
5. Ebonyi State 311
6. Abia State 308
7. Delta State 298.5

Now, how does UNN arrive at the figures they use as departmental cut off marks?

Here’s how.

Shortly after JAMB exam, UNN conducts Post UTME Screening exercise. Thereafter, a department that can take 120 students will start selecting candidates from the highest scorer. They will keep going down till they get 120 students.

Once they get 120 students, others are cut off and the aggregate score of the 120th student becomes the cut off mark.

However, if the actual carrying capacity of such department is 200, the remaining 70 students may gain admission via ELDS, Staff Request, Shopping and so on.

Note that the merit list will always contain names of candidates whose aggregates are lower than the merit cut off mark. The admission of such candidates is usually on the basis of Catchment Area.

Once you see the genuine cut off mark for your prospective course and your aggregate score is up to or above it, your admission is sure. You can start celebrating.

Yes, because UNN primary admission is transparent and strictly on merit. The only reason you may not be admitted is if you have wrong subject combination.

I have to end this piece here. Congratulations if you already made it.
