The grades of a few students might suffer from sports participation, but I think more students will work harder and will learn to manage time better if they are allowed to take part in sports. Learning to organize time is also an important lesson to be gained from school. Happy people tend to try to meet expectations, and less capable students may even do better in school to prove that being in sports do not do them any harm.

Equally good is the argument that everyone must succeed at something. If a poor student can excel in sports, he will develop self-esteem. Once that student feels good about himself or herself, the student may transfer that confidence to school work and actually get better grades. The old adage that success breeds success applies here.

While the attitude that school work comes first is a good point, I think that permitting a student to participate in sports and to develop a self-image is more important. The school should give extra help to the less competent students, especially in learning time management. It should let the students contribute to school spirit on the playing field as well as in the classroom.

Agriculture in Nigeria appears to focus attention on food crops now. Most of the river basins and irrigation projects are pro occupied with the cultivation of staple food crops like rice, cassava, vegetable and legumes. The experimental production of other crops like soya beans is being intensified. Their efforts are yielding favourable results. However, farmers face certain problems in their march towards self-sufficiency in agricultural production. Farmers are frustrated by lack of storage facilities for most of their perishable products. Also, they have to put up with inadequate market outlet. Unless farmers can be assured of adequate benefits from their labour in the form of enhanced incomes, they will be much discouraged and their efforts towards higher productivity will seem pointless. The problems appears to have come to a head with the recent death of the ineffective commodity boards.

Application of modern methods and inputs in agriculture like irrigation, hybrid seeds, fertilizers and pest control, can yield dramatic results within short intervals of time. Adequate processing and preservation facilities can stop the loss of farm produce from heat and fermentation and remove the problem of seasonal scarcity. These are clear indication that the country can easily produce more food items than it can consume.
