SECTION B – THEORY

QUESTION 1

A window cleaner has a ladder which is 5m long. He places it so that it reaches a window which is 4m from the ground. How far from the wall is the foot of the ladder?

QUESTION 2

Find the area of a sector of a circle of radius 7cm, if the angle of the sector at the centre of the circle is 108⁰. (Take π = 22/7)

QUESTION 3

Solve the simultaneous equation.
2x + y = 7
x – y = 2

QUESTION 4

a. Factorize x² – 7x + 12
b. Solve (x – 2) / 3 = 8

Answers to Section B (Essay) Questions of Junior WAEC 2026 Mathematics

QUESTION 1

The ladder, wall, and ground form a right-angled triangle.
Length of ladder (hypotenuse) = 5m
Height of the window = 4m

Using Pythagoras theorem:
Distance from wall² = 5² − 4²
= 25 − 16
= 9

Distance from the wall = √9 = 3m

QUESTION 2

Formula for area of a sector:
Area = (θ / 360) × πr²

Given:
θ = 108⁰
r = 7cm
π = 22/7

Area = (108 / 360) × (22/7) × 7²
= (3 / 10) × (22/7) × 49
= (3 / 10) × 154
= 46.2 cm²

QUESTION 3

Given equations:
2x + y = 7 …… (1)
x − y = 2 …… (2)

Add (1) and (2):
2x + y + x − y = 7 + 2
3x = 9
x = 3

Substitute x = 3 into equation (2):
3 − y = 2
y = 1

Solution: x = 3, y = 1

QUESTION 4

a. Factorize x² − 7x + 12

Find two numbers that multiply to 12 and add up to −7.
These numbers are −3 and −4.

x² − 7x + 12 = (x − 3)(x − 4)

b. Solve (x − 2) / 3 = 8

Multiply both sides by 3:
x − 2 = 24

x = 24 + 2
x = 26

End.
