9. The liquid at the joint which acts as lubricant is called synovial fluid.
10. The softer bone which covers the end of the bone at joint is called cartilage.
Answers to Section C (Essay)
1. Give at least one function of the following terms:
a. Skeleton:
It gives shape and support to the body and protects delicate internal organs.
b. Muscle:
Muscles help in movement by contracting and relaxing different parts of the body.
c. Kidney:
The kidney removes excess water, salts, and urea from the blood to form urine.
1b. Enumerate the five alimentary canal organs you have studied.
1. Mouth
2. Oesophagus
3. Stomach
4. Small intestine
5. Large intestine
1c. What is the end product of these food digestion?
i. Carbohydrates: Glucose
ii. Protein: Amino acids
2a. Why is oxygen important to living things?
Oxygen is important because it is used in the process of respiration to release energy from food.
2b. Differentiate between breathing and internal respiration.
- Breathing is the physical process of inhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide through the lungs.
- Internal respiration is the chemical process where oxygen is used by body cells to produce energy.
2c. Explain the mechanism of the heart.
The heart is a muscular organ that pumps blood. It receives deoxygenated blood into the right side and sends it to the lungs for oxygenation. Then, the oxygenated blood returns to the left side and is pumped to the rest of the body.
2d. State 4 needs for excretion.
1. To remove toxic waste from the body
2. To maintain a stable internal environment
3. Τo regulate body temperature
4. To avoid damage to body organs
3a. Draw an annotated diagram of the male reproductive organ.
3b. List 3 excretory organs and the waste product of each.
Organ | Waste Product
1. Kidney | Urine (urea, salts, water)
2. Skin | Sweat (water and salts)
3. Lungs | Carbon dioxide and water
3c. Explain the difference in breathing rate before and after exercise.
Before exercise, the breathing rate is normal. After exercise, the breathing rate increases to supply more oxygen to the muscles and remove carbon dioxide quickly.
3d. Define peristalsis.
Peristalsis is the wave-like movement of muscles in the wall of the digestive tract that pushes food along the alimentary canal.
