COMPREHENSION PASSAGE

Read the passage carefully, and answer the questions that follows.

Okonkwo had just blown out the palm oil lamp and stretched himself on his bamboo bed when he heard the ogene of the town-crier piercing the still night air. Gome, gome, gome, gome, boomed the hollow metal. Then, the town crier gave his message and at the end of it beat his instrument again. This was the message; every man of Umuofia was asked to gather at the market place tomorrow morning. Okonkwo wondered what was amiss. He had discerned a clear over tune of tragedy in the crier’s voice and even now he could still hear it as it grew dimmer and dimer in the distance.

In the morning, the market place was full. There must have been about ten thousand men there, all taking in low voices. At last, Ogbuefi Ezeugo stood up in the midst of them and bellowed four times, “Umuofia Kwenu”, and on each occasion he faced a different direction and seemed to push the air with a clenched fist… He moved his hand over his white beard. He then adjusted his cloth, which was passed under his right armpit and tied above his left shoulder.

“Umuofia Kwenu: he bellowed a fifth time and the crowd yelled in answer. Suddenly, like one possessed, he shot out his left hand and pointed in the direction of Mbaino and said through gleaming white teeth firmly clenched: “Those sons of wild animals have dared to murder a daughter of Umuofia”. He threw his head down and gnashed his teeth and allowed a murmur of suppressed anger to sweep the crowd.

When he began again, the anger on his face was gone and in its place a sort of smile hovered, more terrible, more sinister than the anger and in a clear unemotional voice, he told Umuofia how their daughter had gone to the market at Mbaino and had been killed. That woman, said Ezeugo, was the wife of Ogbuefi Udo and he pointed to a man who sat near him with a bowed head. The crowd then shouted

The Principal
Sure Success Academy
Online Street, Internet

Dear Sir,

Complaint About Incessant Noise Making in the School

I am writing to bring to your attention the disturbing level of noise making within the school premises, especially during school hours. This has become a serious problem that affects students’ concentration and overall academic performance.

The main sources of the noise include students shouting in the corridors, playing in the classrooms before lessons, and sometimes even during lessons when teachers are not present. Also, the excessive noise from the school compound during break and after school hours adds to the distraction.

Sir, I suggest the following ways to curb the noise:

1. Appoint more prefects or staff to monitor the school environment.
2. Punish defaulters who disturb the peace during lesson time.
3. Educate students on the importance of maintaining a quiet learning environment.
4. Ring the bell early enough to signal the start and end of break to reduce loitering.

I believe that if these steps are taken, our school will become more peaceful and conducive for learning. Thank you for your attention and understanding.

Yours faithfully,
Henry Divine
JSS2 Student

2. An Informal Letter Describing your School to your Cousin Overseas:

Sure Success Academy
Online Street, Internet
9th June, 2025

Dear Cousin,

Greetings from Nigeria!

I hope you are doing well over there. I decided to write and tell you about my school—Sure Success Academy. It is a wonderful place to learn, and I really enjoy being a student here.

Our school has big classrooms, neat surroundings, and a spacious assembly ground. The teachers are very friendly and teach us well. We have subjects like English Language, Mathematics, Basic Technology, and many others. My favorite subject is Basic Science because I love doing experiments.

We also have a school library, a computer room, and a large field where we play football and other games. On Mondays and Fridays, we wear our uniform for sports and carry out physical exercises.

One thing I really like about my school is that we pray and sing every morning before classes begin. The students here are kind, and we all try to help one another.

I wish you could visit someday and see it for yourself. I believe you would like it too!

Take care and write back soon.

Your loving cousin,
Henry Divine
