Fashion Design And Clothing Technology Course

Fashion Design and Clothing Technology is a diploma programme offered in most Nigerian Polytechnics and Monotechnics. It describes the entire process of fashion design from concept through to finished product. The course covers the nuts and bolts of designing and making clothing and accessories, including fabric selection.

Is Fashion Design And Clothing Technology a Science Course?

As you will see in the compulsory O’level subjects for fashion design and clothing technology, the course can be regarded as a science course.

Now the natural question is, “Can an art student study fashion designing?” In other words, you are asking whether fashion designing is an art course.

The truth is that “fashion design” is a form of art dedicated to the creation of clothing and other lifestyle accessories. But if you are talking about the course, “Fashion Design And Clothing Technology,” you will have to deal with many science subjects both in your O’level and JAMB.

JAMB UTME Subject Combination for Fashion Design And Clothing Technology

In UTME, note that English Language is mandatory for all courses. The other three subjects required to study Fashion Design And Clothing Technology under the Faculty of Arts and Humanities in the institutions listed above are:

Chemistry and any two of Biology/Agricultural Science/Physics/Mathematics.

O’Level Requirements for Fashion Design And Clothing Technology

There are compulsory subjects for fashion designing in secondary school. So to apply for Fashion Design And Clothing Technology as a UTME candidate, you require: Home Economics/Technical Drawing and any four of the following:

1. Fine Art
2. History
3. Physics
4. Chemistry
5. Biology/Agricultural Science
6. Mathematics
7. Clothing and Textiles
8. Literature in English
9. English Language
10. Home Management

At least a credit pass in English Language is compulsory.

  • Delta State Polytechnic
  • Federal Polytechnic, Oko
  • Institute Of Management Technology, Enugu
  • Jigawa State Institute Of Information Technology
  • Kaduna Polytechnic
  • Kalac Christal Polytechnic
  • Kano State Polytechnic
  • The Ibarapa Polytechnic, Eruwa
  • Yaba College Of Technology
  • Ibadan Polytechnic

Requirements for Direct Entry Candidates

To apply for Fashion Design And Clothing Technology as a Direct Entry candidate, you require:

(i) YABATECH: offers the course as Fashion Design and requires ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language, Fine Art or Clothing, Textile or Home Economics and any two subjects from the following History, Geography, Biology, Health Science, Technical Drawing, Economics, Mathematics and Chemistry.

(ii) KADPOLY: requires credit passes in English Language, Mathematics and any three from Home Economics, Technical Drawing, Fine Art, Clothing and textiles, History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Agricultural Science, Literature in English and Home Management.

(iii) OKOPOLY: requires four ‘O’ level credit passes in English language, Fine Art and any other two subjects from History, Clothing and Textile, Chemistry, Biology, Health Science,Technical Drawing and at least credit pass in English Language is compulsory.

(iv) AUCHIPOLY: requires five ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, and any other three subjects at a sitting. Six credit passes including English Language and Mathematics at two sittings as course requirements.

(v) AUCHIPOLY: accepts any three subjects as UTME subjects.

(vi) IMTE: requires credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, and any three of Clothing and Textile/Food and Nutrition/Home Management, Technical Drawing/Fine Art, history, Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Agricultural Science, Literature in English and relevant NTC/NBC and NVC Trades.

(vii) BENPOLY: requires four ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language,Fine Art and any other two subjects from History, Clothing and Textile, Chemistry, Biology or Health Science, Technical Drawing and Mathematics.
A pass in Mathematics will be at advantage.

UTME Subjects REQUIREMENT:

(ix) OKOPOLY: accepts Fine Art and Economics.

ii) KADPOLY: accepts any three of Biology/Agricultural Science, Fine Art/Technical Drawing, Mathematics,
Economics/Commerce, Clothing and Textile Technology or Chemistry.

iii) JSIIT: accepts Biology/Geography, Technical Drawing instead of Chemistry.
