Answers to Section B (Theory)

(a) Simplify: (3/4) of (2/5) × (5/6).

“Of” means multiply. So compute: (3/4) × (2/5) × (5/6).
Multiply numerators: 3 × 2 × 5 = 30.
Multiply denominators: 4 × 5 × 6 = 120.
Fraction = 30/120. Reduce by 30: 30 ÷ 30 = 1 and 120 ÷ 30 = 4.
Answer: 1/4

(b) Find the L.C.M of 24, 36, and 48.

Prime factors:
24 = 2³ × 3
36 = 2² × 3²
48 = 2⁴ × 3
Take highest powers: 2⁴ and 3² → L.C.M = 2⁴ × 3² = 16 × 9 = 144.
Answer: 144

(a) Solve for x: 2x + 5 = 15.

Subtract 5 from both sides: 2x = 15 − 5 = 10.
Divide both sides by 2: x = 10 ÷ 2 = 5.
Answer: x = 5

(b) Express 4/5 as a percentage and as a decimal.

Percentage: (4/5) × 100% = 80%.
Decimal: 4 ÷ 5 = 0.8.
Answer: 80% and 0.8

(a) Find the area and perimeter of a rectangle with length 12 cm and breadth 7 cm.

Area = length × breadth = 12 cm × 7 cm = 84 cm².

(b) Calculate the cost of fencing the rectangle at ₦150 per meter.

Perimeter = 38 cm. Convert to metres: 38 cm = 38 ÷ 100 = 0.38 m.
Cost = perimeter (m) × rate per metre = 0.38 × ₦150 = ₦57.00.

(a) A man bought a bag of rice for ₦8,000 and sold it for ₦9,600. Find his profit and profit percentage.

Profit = Selling Price − Cost Price = ₦9,600 − ₦8,000 = ₦1,600.
Profit percentage = (Profit ÷ Cost Price) × 100% = (1,600 ÷ 8,000) × 100% = 0.2 × 100% = 20%.
Answer: Profit = ₦1,600; Profit % = 20%

(b) Find the selling price if the profit was 20%.

Selling price = Cost Price × (1 + profit rate) = ₦8,000 × (1 + 0.20) = ₦8,000 × 1.20 = ₦9,600.
Answer: ₦9,600

5.

(a) The angles of a triangle are in the ratio 2:3:4. Find the size of each angle.

Sum of ratio parts = 2 + 3 + 4 = 9 parts.
One part = 180° ÷ 9 = 20°.
Angles: 2 × 20° = 40°; 3 × 20° = 60°; 4 × 20° = 80°.

(b) Draw and label a triangle using the above angles.
