Introduction to Mathematics as a School Subject
Mathematics is one of the most important subjects taught in school. It deals with numbers, shapes, patterns, and logical thinking. Mathematics helps students develop problem-solving skills that they can apply in everyday life.
Right from the early years in school, students learn how to count, add, subtract, multiply, and divide. As they progress, they are introduced to more complex topics like fractions, decimals, percentages, algebra, geometry, and statistics.
Mathematics is used in many school subjects and careers. For example, science uses math for measurements and experiments, while subjects like economics and geography use statistics and graphs. Engineers, doctors, bankers, and even fashion designers use mathematics in different ways.
The aim of teaching mathematics in school is to help students:
- Understand and apply basic mathematical concepts
- Develop logical and critical thinking
- Become confident in solving problems
- Prepare for future careers that require mathematical knowledge
In summary, mathematics is more than just a subject. It is a skill for life. Learning math builds a strong foundation for future learning and real-world decision-making.

Answers to Section B (Theory)
1. The angles of a quadrilateral are 20°, 2x°, 100° and 140°. Find the value of x.
Sum of angles in a quadrilateral = 360°
20° + 2x° + 100° + 140° = 360°
260° + 2x° = 360°
2x = 360 – 260 = 100
x = 100 ÷ 2 = 50°
2. The length of a rectangle is three times the width. If the perimeter is 36cm, calculate the width.
Let the width be x cm. Then the length is 3x cm.
Perimeter = 2(length + width) = 36cm
2(3x + x) = 36
2(4x) = 36
8x = 36
x = 36 ÷ 8 = 4.5cm
3. (i) Simplify 3.72 × 0.025
3.72 × 0.025 = 0.093
3. (ii) A boy is paid N200.00 for a five-day job. Calculate his monthly payment assuming that every month is 30 days.
First, find daily pay: N200 ÷ 5 = N40 per day
Monthly pay = N40 × 30 = N1,200.00
4. Two triangles P and Q have sides 4cm, 5cm, 11cm and 18cm, 22cm, 24cm respectively. Find the ratio of the perimeter of P to the perimeter of Q.
Perimeter of P = 4 + 5 + 11 = 20cm
Perimeter of Q = 18 + 22 + 24 = 64cm
Ratio of P to Q = 20 : 64 = 5 : 16
Answer: 5 : 16
