How to Write a Composition About Myself [For All Classes]

Today in our tutorial series, I would be teaching you about composition. By way of introduction, composition is all about putting words and sentences together to create a meaningful piece of written work. The work in question may be an essay or a story about someone or something, or even an event. Most of the times, examiners require students to write composition about their friend, father, mother, school and so on, and they write with relative ease. But when the topic becomes, “A Composition About Myself,” you find many students feeling clumsy about it.

The reason is possibly because it is a lot easier to write about other people apart from yourself. Maybe because you can easily observe them and describe their appearance, personality and character.

Whatever be the case, in this article, I will show you how to write a composition about myself without hassle.

How to Write a Composition About Myself

What is a Composition About Myself?

Composition about myself is otherwise referred to as personal essay or personal narrative. It is a piece of writing in which you describe and share information about yourself as an individual. The information you share about yourself may include your personal background, experiences, interests, achievements, goals, aspirations, and so on.

In other words, a composition about myself is a form of self-expression where the writer reflects deeply on their own life and tries their best to present an account of who they are in the most cohesive and engaging manner.

As a rule of thumb, any well written “composition about myself” would actualize two basic things:

  1. it would provide the writer the opportunity to showcase their unique qualities, values and personality. In addition to that, they can share their insights or perspectives over life issues.
  2. it would allow the reader to gain understanding about the writer’s life, identity, and so on.

Steps to Writing a Composition About Myself

Below is an elaborate step-by-step guide on how to write a composition about myself. By the time you are done going through the steps, you would be able to craft a formidable personal essay.

Step 1: Brainstorming

Brainstorming is the very first step in writing “A Composition About Myself.” It has to do with the writer thinking out ideas and gathering very relevant information about themselves. So, as the writer, you can think about ways to perfectly describe yourself. Think about the things that make you unique as a person, and the qualities that make you to stand out from the rest. Then thinks about your strengths and weaknesses, your passion and interests. Also consider your personal experiences, significant life events and so on. By the time you are done with this step, you would have gathered enough material to include in your composition.

Step 2: Introduction

After an effective brainstorming, you are ready to begin the next step which is introduction. The introduction is actually the starting point of the composition, and you must make every effort to grab the attention of the reader here. You can achieve this by beginning your composition with an engaging opening sentence or a captivating anecdote that introduces you.

You should also include other relevant details that create a strong first impression about you. For example: your name, age, complexion, body size, name of school, class, best subject, color, and so on.

Step 3: Organizing the Composition

This is another important step in writing a winning composition about myself. As the writer, you must endeavor to organize your thoughts and information in a logical and coherent manner. You must make use of paragraphs to divide your composition into different sections that expound distinct thoughts.

For example, you can have separate paragraphs where you discuss about your personal background, hobbies, achievements, goals, and future aspirations.

Step 4: Personal Background

This step is in keeping with what I said above about organizing your composition. To come up with a worthwhile composition about yourself, you must dedicate a paragraph to discussing your personal background as an individual. In the paragraph, you can talk about the family you came from, where you were born and raised, and any unique personal experiences that have shaped you.

In a nutshell, this is where you discuss most of the things that have to do with your personality and individuality.

Step 5: Hobbies and Interests

Of course, this should come in a separate paragraph. Here, you are to talk about your hobbies, interests, and any extracurricular activities you enjoy. Take some time and space to describe why you are passionate about these activities. If possible, you can also briefly discuss how you engage in the activities and any notable achievements you have made so far.

Step 6: Achievements and Experiences

Life is in stages and every stage comes with experiences. At the end of most life’s stages, people come out with significant experiences and maybe, accomplishments. Dedicate a paragraph to discussing some of the most significant experiences you’ve had in life, and your achievements. For example, you can discuss your academic achievements, awards , and the competitions you have participated in. You can also highlight any community service or leadership roles you have played in the past.

As you discuss these experiences, ensure that you provide specific examples and also share the lessons you learned from them.

Step 7: Goals and Aspirations

One of the characteristics that mark youthfulness is aspirations. Young people are full of goals and aspirations. So it would not be out of place to include a paragraph where you discuss your future goals and aspirations. There, you can talk about your career ambitions, academic objectives, or personal dreams. Be realistic by explaining why these goals are so important to you and how you plan to achieve them.

Step 8: Conclusion

The conclusion is the final part of the composition. Here, you are to summarize your main points and leave your readers with a memorable ending. In this final part, you can reflect on what you have learned about yourself through the writing process. You can also express your hopes for the future.

Step 9: Drafting and Revising

Drafting and revising are very important steps to writing any good composition. When you are done with brainstorming and organizing your thoughts, the next thing to do is to write a rough draft. When you are done with this first draft, you review it for clarity, coherence, and grammatical accuracy. In the process, you can add or remove information, and also improve your sentence structures. The goal is to ensure a smooth flow of thoughts.

Step 10: Proofreading and Editing

Proofreading and editing is the last step in our journey towards crafting a good “Composition about Myself.” You must make out time to proofread your composition for spelling and punctuation errors. Depending on the conditions around the composition writing, you can as well seek feedback from your friends or teachers to get suggestions for improvement.

Sample of Composition About Myself

They say life is a journey, and mine has been filled with exhilarating challenges that have shaped me into the person I am today. From the small town where I was born to the adventures that have taken me around the world, my story is one of resilience, growth, and self-discovery.

Growing up in a close-knit community nestled in the mountains, I learned the value of community and the importance of strong family bonds. My childhood was filled with the scent of pine trees, the sound of rushing streams, and the warmth of neighbors who felt like extended family. My grandmother’s kitchen was a haven of comfort, where the aroma of homemade apple pie mingled with stories of our ancestors, grounding me in a deep sense of belonging.

One of the passions that has defined me is my love for photography. I still remember the day my father handed me his old, worn-out camera. It was a simple gesture, but it sparked a lifelong passion. Through the lens of my camera, I capture moments of beauty and tell stories that words alone cannot convey. Photography has become my creative outlet, allowing me to immerse myself in the world’s diverse cultures and landscapes. Each photograph is a piece of my soul, a silent testament to the wonder I see in the world.

One of the most transformative experiences in my life was volunteering in a remote village in a developing country. The journey there was arduous, involving a bumpy bus ride through winding dirt roads and a trek across a rickety bridge. But it was worth every step. Witnessing the resilience, joy, and strength of the people there inspired me to dedicate myself to making a positive impact in the world. I spent my days teaching children, their eager eyes lighting up with each new lesson. It was through that experience that I discovered my passion for social activism and humanitarian work.

My future aspirations are deeply rooted in my desire to contribute to a more just and sustainable world. I am determined to pursue a career in international development, working towards empowering marginalized communities and advocating for social change. I believe that through education, empathy, and collaboration, we can create a brighter future for all. The faces of those I’ve met along my journey—the children in the village, the elders with their wisdom—fuel my commitment to this cause.

As I reflect on my journey so far, I am grateful for the challenges that have shaped me and the opportunities that have allowed me to grow. I am excited to embrace the unknown, to continue exploring, and to make a meaningful difference in the world. My story is ever-evolving, and I am eager to see the chapters that lie ahead. With each step, I carry the lessons of my past and the hopes for my future, ready to write the next page of my life’s adventure.

Final Thoughts

This is where we end today’s tutorial on How to Write a Composition About Myself. I believe you have seen how very simple it can be especially with the sample above. From the post, you would have observed that there are just three key areas to focus on when writing a composition about oneself: personal experiences, passions, and aspirations. Start your writing with a compelling opening sentence to draw your readers in. Then highlight some of the unique experiences that have shaped you as a person. Describe your passions vividly and clearly outline your future goals.

In all of these, do your best to be genuine, specific and reflective. Don’t just focus on sharing what happened, let the reader know how that event made you feel and how it influenced who you are today.
