Answers to Section B (Essay) Questions of Junior WAEC 2025 Cultural and Creative Arts (CCA)

QUESTION 1

a. What is an open score?

An open score is a type of musical notation where each individual part is written on its own staff, with the staves being spaced apart for clarity. This is commonly used in larger works like orchestral compositions, where each instrument or voice is represented separately. The score provides a clear view of all the parts at once, allowing musicians to see their part in relation to the others.

b. Write the two types of music notation.

The two main types of music notation are:

  1. Staff Notation: The most common form, using the five-line staff to notate music. Notes are placed on the staff to indicate pitch, and the rhythm is indicated by different note shapes and time signatures.
  2. Tonic Solfa Notation: A system used primarily in vocal music, which uses syllables such as “Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti” to represent the notes of the scale. It helps in sight-singing and understanding musical intervals.

c. Write an example of Solfa notation.

An example of Solfa notation for the C major scale would be:

  • Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti, Do (Ascending)
  • Do, Ti, La, Sol, Fa, Mi, Re, Do (Descending)

QUESTION 2

  1. Draw the bass clef and label it.

I can’t physically draw here, but I can describe how to do it:

  1. The bass clef symbol looks like a stylized letter “F” with two dots placed on either side of the fourth line from the bottom of the staff.
  2. The bottom line of the staff in bass clef represents G, and the lines and spaces represent the following notes:
    • Lines (from bottom to top): G, B, D, F, A.
    • Spaces (from bottom to top): A, C, E, G.

QUESTION 3

a. Define drawing?

Drawing is the act of making marks on a surface, typically with tools such as pencils, pens, or charcoal, to create a visual representation. It can be used for various purposes such as art, illustration, technical design, or even communication.

b. State six (6) uses or importance of drawing?

  1. Expression of Creativity: Drawing allows individuals to express their ideas, emotions, and imagination.
  2. Communication: It serves as a medium for visual communication, especially in situations where words may not be as effective (e.g., illustrations, diagrams).
  3. Skill Development: Drawing helps in improving fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
  4. Planning and Design: In fields like architecture, engineering, and fashion, drawing is used as a tool for planning and conceptualizing ideas.
  5. Artistic Development: Drawing is fundamental to artistic development, as it is a basis for other forms of visual art like painting and sculpture.
  6. Education: It is used in educational settings to teach concepts, especially in subjects like geometry, biology, and geography.

QUESTION 4

a. What is craft?

Craft refers to the practice of creating items by hand using traditional techniques. These items are typically practical, functional, or decorative and often involve skills passed down through generations. Craft is usually distinguished from fine art in that it emphasizes utility and skillful workmanship.
