JAMB Subject Combination for Linguistics
In UTME, note that English Language is mandatory for all courses. The other three subjects required to study Linguistics under the Faculty of Arts and Humanities in the institutions listed above are: Any Language and two other subjects.
Special Requirements (Waiver) Remarks (JAMB Brochure for Linguistics)
(i) UNIBEN accepts two Arts subjects and any other subject.
(ii) UNIZIK and UNILORIN require one Arts subject and any two subjects from Arts/Social Sciences.
(iii) ABSU accepts one Arts and two other subjects.
(iv) UNIUYO requires Literature in English and any other two Arts or Social Science subjects.
(v) UI requires any language (preferably an African Language) and/or English Literature and/or at least one other Arts subject or Social Science subject
(vi) BSU and KWASU require Literature in English plus any other two subjects
(vii) UNIOSUN accepts any three Arts subjects.
O’Level Requirements for linguistics for UTME Candidates
To apply for Linguistics as a UTME candidate, you require: Five SSCE credit passes including English Language.
Special Requirements (Waiver) Remarks (JAMB Brochure for Linguistics)
(i) UNIBEN requires SSCE credit passes in Literature in English, one Arts subject and at least a pass in Mathematics.
(ii) UI and UNILORIN require ‘O’ level credit passes in Arts and Social Sciences. UNILORIN requires at least one Nigerian Language) or Lit. in English and one other Art subject. UNILORIN accepts Science subject.
(iii) UNIOSUN and UNIUYO require credit pass in Literature in English.
(iv) UNILAG requires five ‘O’ level credits to include English Language, Mathematics and three other subjects from Arts or Social Sciences. A credit pass in one Nigerian Language will be an advantage.
(v) UI requires 5 or 6 ‘O’ level credit passes at one or two sittings to include English Language, Arts and any other two subjects. Credit passes in African language and Mathematics will be an advantage.
(vi) UNILORIN requires O credit passes in Arts and Social Sciences. Also requires at least one Nigerian Language or Literature in English and one other Arts subjects.
(vii) DELSU requires credit pass in Literature in English.
(viii) UNN – as in Linguistics, Igbo and other Nigerian languages.
(ix) KWASU requires credit passes in English,Literature, Mathematics (Pass), plus any other three Arts/Social Science/Science subjects.
(x) BSU requires five SSCE credit passes in Arts and Social Sciences including Literature in English Language.
Requirements for Direct Entry Candidates (JAMB Brochure for Linguistics)
To apply for Linguistics as a Direct Entry candidate, you require: Two ‘A’ level passes or NCE to include any Language, preferably an African Language.
Special Requirements (Waiver) Remarks (JAMB Brochure for Linguistics)
(i) UNICAL accepts ND/NCE in Linguistics, Foreign Language or any Nigerian language.
(ii) UNN – as in Linguistics, Igbo and other Nigerian languages.
(iii) UNIJOS and UNIBEN – No Direct Entry.
(iv) UI accepts:
(a) at least TWO ‘A’ level passes to include any language (preferably an African Language) and another Arts or Social Sciences subject.
(b) NCE to include any language (preferably an African language) and another Arts or Social Science subjects at Credit or better still Merit level.
UI NOTE: A certified knowledge of another language other English will be an added advantage. For a degree in Linguistics,it is an advantage if the UTME or Direct Entry subjects include Literature in English.
(v) UNILAG requires NCE (merit) in two subjects to include a Nigerian language.
(vi) UNILORIN and UI require ‘A’ level or NCE subjects in Arts, Social Science or Science provided not more than one of the subjects is in Social Science.
(vii) EKSU: requires two ‘A’ level passes or NCE at credit level in Arts, Social Science or Science to include any language preferably a Nigerian Language.
(viii) AAUA accepts NCE (Lower credit/Merit) in Yoruba, Mass Communication and Journalism.
(ix) UNIUYO accept NCE merit in any Nigerian Language.
(x) KWASU – No Direct Entry Admissions.
(xi) BSU accepts two NCE/Advance level passes to include English Language, French or any African Language and one other Arts subjects.
(xii) UNIOSUN requires ‘A’ level passes in English and English Literature. Accepts ND in Mass Communication and Approved equivalents in communication discipline with at least lower credit.
