What is Menstruation?
Menstruation is otherwise referred to as a period. It is a natural process that happens in the bodies of people with female reproductive systems especially when they attain the age of puberty.
Put more directly, menstruation is the monthly shedding of the lining of the uterus. The uterine lining is a tissue that builds up in preparation for a possible pregnancy.
For women that have attained the reproductive age, an egg is released from one of the ovaries during ovulation every month. If the woman is not sexually active, or the egg is not fertilized by sperm, the thickened uterine lining is shed through the vagina. It is this shedding of blood and tissue that we commonly refer to as a period or menstruation.
For most females, the menstrual cycle lasts for 28 days, but it can take more days for others. The bleeding through the vagina normally would last for 3 to 7 days. During this period, some ladies experience symptoms like cramps, bloating, mood swings, breast tenderness, fatigue and so on.

There is no direct yes or no answer to this question. The answer actually depends on one’s
- religious inclination.
- personal convictions.
For people practicing Judaism and for some Christian denominations who draw their doctrines from the old testament, sexual activity during menstruation is a sin. It is unclean and impure, you can read Leviticus 15:19-24.
For Muslims, the Quran prohibits sexual relations with a woman during her period of menstruation in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:222). However, interpretations of this verse vary. Some scholars argue that it primarily addresses the issue of ritual purity and hygiene rather than sinfulness. Some hadith (sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad) also indicate that sexual intercourse during menstruation is prohibited.
In terms of personal convictions, there are people who believe that as long as sexual activity is within the bounds of a loving, consensual marriage, it is not inherently sinful, regardless of the menstrual cycle.
