Meaning of Values
Values are the beliefs and principles that guide people’s behavior and decisions in life. They are like an inbuilt guiding system that helps people to determine what is really important to them and how they desire to live their lives in relation to others.
Examples of values include honesty, kindness, respect, fairness and so on. Values help people to set their priorities in life and also determine their attitudes, actions, and expectations.
So people’s values are the key ingredients that determine what is important to them and how they think, act or react to situations.
For example, if one of your cardinal values is honesty, you will always strive to tell the truth at all cost and you will be transparent in your dealings with others. You will also expect others to relate with you in truth and honesty.
More so, if kindness is a quality you hold in high regard, you will be generous, tolerant and accepting; you will do good to the people you meet without expecting anything in return.
Values are largely personal and it’s difficult to find any two individuals that embody exactly the same values. Different people have different values, however, it is the values that form the foundation for how they interact with the world around them. Possession of different value system explains why two individuals react differently to the same situation.
Types of Values
Just like there are billions of people on the earth, each with distinct thought patterns, behavioral patterns, personalities, and attitudes, so are there different types of values. The reason is because values are the foundations of every outcome you see an any individual’s life.
Do bear in mind that it is not only individuals that possess values. Institutions, organizations and societies also have their values.
Though they are too many, we shall try to categorize values into types to help you to better understand what it is all about. We may not be able to exhaust them but we will explore the most common and important ones here.

1. Personal Values
As the name implies, personal values are values that are characteristic of an individual. In other words, they are the principles, beliefs, and standards that guide an individual’s behavior and decision-making. If you know someone’s personal values, you already know what is important to them and what to expect in their interaction with others.
People’s personal values are shaped by various factors such as culture, upbringing, experiences, and personal reflections.
Examples of personal values include: honesty, integrity, loyalty, compassion, justice, respect, responsibility, and fairness, and so on.
2. Spiritual Values
These values involve beliefs about the purpose of life, transcendental truths, and connection to a higher power or spiritual practice.
Billions of people around the world hold spiritual values as a gateway to connecting to a force higher than them. Examples of spiritual values include: faith, devotion, piety, charity, holiness and so on.
3. Cultural Values
Cultural values are a set of rules or beliefs shared and followed by a group of people in their everyday lives. Examples of cultural values include traditions, customs, and behaviors that are important to a particular cultural group. These values influence the priorities of the people and how they interact with each other.
For example, in some cultures, family relationship is highly valued. So people prioritize spending time with their relatives and supporting each other.
In some other cultures, individualism may be more important. There, you see people focusing more on pursuing their own goals and independence.
It’s all about the identity and practices of a community, and how the individuals interact within it.
4. Family Values
Family values have to do with the beliefs and principles that guide how a family interacts and functions together.
They include love, respect, communication, support and so on.
It is family values that determines how mutual the relationships between family members would be. It also affects how they make decisions and work together to solve their problems.
For example, if you see a family that values honesty, they always communication only and you can see trust among the members.
In the same way, if you see a family that holds empathy and compassion highly, they will always be there for each other during difficult times.
5. Ethical Values
Ethical values are the principles and beliefs that guide people’s behavior, decisions and actions when it has to do with what is considered morally right or wrong. When these values are in place, it helps people to know how best to act in various situations so as to treat others with fairness, honesty, and respect.
Examples of ethical values include integrity, honesty, fairness, compassion, and responsibility. They help people to make choices and take actions are a in line with their moral beliefs. Some of the factors that influence ethical values include cultural norms, religious beliefs, societal expectations, and so on.
6. Organizational Values
This has to do with the beliefs and principles that shape the culture and behavior of an organization. Organizational values show what the organization stands for and what it prioritizes in its operations. They also define the identity of the organization and how the staff conduct themselves.
Examples of organizational values include integrity, teamwork, innovation, customer focus, accountability and so on.
Let take teamwork as an example. If an organization values teamwork, they will encourage collaboration among their employees and foster a supportive work environment.
7. Relationship Values
These are values that guide how people interact and connect with others in various types of relationships. So, whether it is a romantic relationship, ordinary friendship, family relationship or professional relationship, these values influence how the people involved treat one another and how they expect to be treated in return. Examples of relationship values include trust, respect, communication, empathy, honesty, loyalty and so on.
Before going into any type of relationship, it is important that you have strong relationship values. They will guide your attitudes and behaviors, and help you to better manage conflicts.
8. Environmental Values
These are values that guide people’s attitudes and behaviors towards the environment and its protection. They shape people’s actions and choices regarding how they interact with the environment, including how they consume resources, manage waste, and reduce pollution.
If you see people with environmental values, you will know by the way they appreciate, respect, and show genuine concern for the natural world and its resources.
Examples of environmental values include sustainability, conservation, stewardship, and so on.
9. Health Values
These are values that guide the behaviors, attitudes, and decisions of people concerning their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Health values show people’s priorities, preferences, and motivations when it comes to maintaining and improving our health.
Examples of health values include prioritizing regular exercise, eating nutritious foods, getting enough sleep, managing stress, and so on.
So your health values will affect your choice of lifestyle, habits and behaviors that contribute to your overall health and well-being.

Political values are the principles guiding people’s beliefs and actions in governance and public policy. Examples include democracy, freedom, equality, and justice. They are the values that influence people’s views on political issues and their support for parties and candidates.
