Answers to Section B (Theory)

Answers to Question 1.

(a) The mission of the seventy disciples was a practical extension of Jesus’ ministry. After appointing them in pairs, Jesus sent them ahead into every town and place He intended to visit. They were instructed to preach the message of repentance, heal the sick, and declare that the Kingdom of God was near. Jesus told them not to carry money, bag, or sandals, but to depend on the hospitality of those who received them. They were also to pronounce peace on every house they entered and to wipe off the dust from their feet wherever they were rejected. Their mission was successful, as they returned rejoicing that even the demons were subject to them through the name of Jesus.

(b) Two major problems faced by evangelists today are:
1. Lack of financial and material support.
2. Hostility and persecution from unbelievers or non-Christian communities.

Answers to Question 2.

(a) Jesus’ trial before the High Priest began after His arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane. He was first taken to Annas and then to Caiaphas, the High Priest. False witnesses were brought forward to accuse Him, but their testimonies did not agree. When Jesus remained silent, Caiaphas demanded to know if He was the Messiah, the Son of God. Jesus affirmed it, and the High Priest tore his garments, accusing Him of blasphemy. The council declared Him worthy of death and began to mock and beat Him.

(b) During this period, Peter followed Jesus at a distance and sat among the people in the courtyard. When accused of being one of Jesus’ followers, he denied Him three times, just as Jesus had predicted. After the third denial and the crowing of the cock, Peter remembered Jesus’ words, went out, and wept bitterly in remorse.

Answers to Question 3.

(a) Mary’s encounter with the Angel Gabriel took place in Nazareth. The angel greeted her, saying, “Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee.” Gabriel told her that she would conceive and bear a son named Jesus, who would be called the Son of the Most High and reign over the house of Jacob forever. Mary was confused and asked how it would happen since she was a virgin. The angel explained that the Holy Spirit would come upon her and that nothing was impossible with God.

(b) Two significant points in Mary’s reply are:
1. Her faith and submission to God’s will as she said, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord.”
2. Her acceptance of God’s plan despite not fully understanding how it would happen.

Answers to Question 4.

(a) After the death of Judas Iscariot, Peter reminded the disciples of the need to choose another apostle to take his place. Two men were nominated — Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. The disciples prayed, asking God to show who He had chosen. They then cast lots, and the lot fell on Matthias, who was numbered among the twelve apostles.

(b) Three guidelines that should be observed in conducting elections are:
1. There should be prayerful dependence on God for guidance.
2. Qualified and faithful candidates should be nominated.
3. The process should be fair, transparent, and free from favoritism or corruption.

Answers to Question 5.

(a) Gehazi was the servant of Elisha. After Naaman, the Syrian general, was healed of leprosy, he offered gifts to Elisha, but the prophet refused. Gehazi, motivated by greed, ran after Naaman, lied that Elisha had sent him to collect gifts. Naaman gladly gave him silver and garments. When Gehazi returned, Elisha asked where he had been, and he lied again. Elisha, through the Spirit of God, knew what had happened and pronounced a curse on him. As a result, Gehazi was struck with leprosy, and it remained with him and his descendants.

(b) Three lessons that can be learned from his conduct are:
1. Greed and dishonesty lead to disgrace and punishment.
2. God’s servants must be content and truthful.
3. Nothing is hidden from God, no matter how secret the act may be.

Answers to Question 6.

(a) Paul’s teaching on the dignity of labour emphasizes that work is honourable and necessary for human survival. He taught that everyone should work with their own hands to earn a living and not depend on others. In his letters to the Thessalonians, he warned against idleness and encouraged Christians to be diligent and productive. Paul himself was an example, as he made tents to support his ministry and refused to be a burden to the Church.

(b) Four ways the Church can encourage productivity among Christian youths are:
1. Organizing skills acquisition and empowerment programs.
2. Teaching the value of hard work and self-reliance.
3. Providing job opportunities or micro-loans for small businesses.
4. Recognizing and rewarding diligent and faithful workers in the Church.

Answers to Question 7.

(a) The qualities of a true Christian leader include humility, integrity, wisdom, and faithfulness. A true leader should be prayerful, compassionate, and able to inspire others by example. He must be just, patient, and willing to serve rather than dominate. Above all, his life should reflect the teachings of Christ and the fruit of the Holy Spirit.

(b) Four ways Church leaders can promote unity among believers are:
1. Teaching love and forgiveness as core Christian virtues.
2. Encouraging collaboration and understanding among members.
3. Avoiding favoritism, discrimination, and divisive statements.
4. Promoting inter-denominational fellowship and common Christian goals.
