Information Technology (IT) plays an essential role in the modern world, impacting how we communicate, work, and live. At its core, IT encompasses the use of computers, networks, software, and other electronic systems to manage and distribute information efficiently. From social media and online banking to e-learning platforms and telemedicine, IT has redefined convenience, enabling people to connect, transact, and access services from any location with an internet connection.

One of the most remarkable impacts of IT is in the field of healthcare. Telemedicine allows patients to consult with doctors remotely, bridging geographical barriers and providing timely care. In education, IT has introduced e-learning, giving students access to a vast array of resources and enabling flexible learning schedules. Additionally, artificial intelligence and data analysis have allowed organizations to make informed decisions by understanding patterns and trends in consumer behavior.

However, IT also presents certain challenges. The prevalence of technology increases the risk of cyber threats, which can compromise privacy and personal data. As automation advances, there is a growing concern that certain jobs may become obsolete, potentially impacting employment opportunities. Despite these challenges, the advantages of IT in promoting global connectivity, knowledge-sharing, and problem-solving are invaluable.

Sleep is a critical component of human health, impacting nearly every aspect of physical and mental well-being. Research shows that adults require 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night to function optimally. During sleep, the body engages in essential restorative processes, such as tissue repair, muscle growth, and immune strengthening. Good sleep is also linked to improved cognitive functions like memory, focus, and emotional regulation, which are vital for daily activities and learning.

Inadequate sleep, however, can lead to several negative consequences. Physically, it may weaken the immune system and increase the risk of chronic illnesses like obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. Mentally, poor sleep can contribute to issues such as mood swings, irritability, and impaired decision-making. For students, a regular sleep routine is fundamental to maintaining academic performance, as it aids concentration and information retention.

The demands of modern life, combined with excessive screen time and irregular sleep patterns, often make it challenging for individuals to prioritize sleep. Yet, adopting healthy habits, such as establishing a consistent sleep schedule, reducing caffeine intake, and limiting screen time before bed, can significantly enhance sleep quality. In a world that values productivity, it is essential to recognize sleep as a non-negotiable aspect of health, contributing to a longer, healthier, and more fulfilling life.

Questions:

(a) Summarize, in six sentences, the physical and mental benefits of sleep as described in the passage.

Answers to English Language Exam Questions for SS2 Second Term

Answers to Section A Questions on Essay Writing

1. Letter to a Friend

12, Unity Street,
Ikeja, Lagos.
30th April, 2026.

Dear John,

I hope you are doing well. I want to share an experience that really tested me recently. I was given a task to speak in front of a large audience in my school during assembly. At first, I felt nervous because I am not used to speaking before many people. My hands were shaking, and I even thought of giving up.

However, I decided to prepare well. I practiced my speech many times and also encouraged myself to be confident. On the day of the presentation, I was still a bit afraid, but I gathered courage and faced the crowd.

To my surprise, everything went smoothly. I spoke clearly, and the students listened attentively. When I finished, I felt very happy and proud of myself. It gave me confidence that I can overcome fear if I try.

This experience has taught me that challenges help us grow stronger.

Yours sincerely,
Henry.

2. Letter to the Local Government Chairman

Government Secondary School,
Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
30th April, 2026.

The Chairman,
Local Government Council,
Port Harcourt.

Dear Sir,

REQUEST FOR IMPROVEMENT OF SCHOOL INFRASTRUCTURE

I write to respectfully request your assistance in improving the infrastructure of our school, especially the classrooms and library.

Many of our classrooms are in poor condition. The roofs leak during rainfall, and there are not enough desks for students. This makes learning uncomfortable and affects our concentration.

Also, our school library is not well equipped. There are few books, most of which are outdated. There is no proper seating arrangement, and the environment is not conducive for reading.

We kindly request the renovation of classrooms, provision of desks and chairs, and repair of damaged roofs. We also need modern textbooks, shelves, and reading tables for the library.

These improvements will create a better learning environment, encourage reading habits, and help students perform better in their studies.

We believe that your support will greatly improve the quality of education in our school.

Thank you for your attention.

Yours faithfully,
Henry Divine

3. A Story About a Time When I Helped Someone in Need

One afternoon, as I was returning from school, I saw an old woman struggling to cross a busy road. Vehicles were moving fast, and she looked confused and afraid. Many people passed by without helping her.

I felt concerned and decided to assist her. I approached her politely and asked if she needed help. She nodded, and I carefully held her hand. I waited for the right moment, then guided her safely across the road. It was not easy because the traffic was heavy, but I stayed calm and focused.

After we crossed, she smiled and thanked me warmly. Her words of appreciation touched my heart. I felt happy and fulfilled, knowing that I had made a difference in someone’s life.

From that experience, I learned that helping others does not require much, just a willing heart. It also taught me to be kind and attentive to people around me.

Since that day, I have always tried to help those in need whenever I can.

4. A Debate Opposing the Motion that “Technology has done more harm than good in society.”

Technology has greatly changed the world we live in today. While some people believe it has done more harm than good, I strongly disagree. Technology has brought more benefits to society than harm.

Firstly, technology has improved communication. In the past, people had to wait for days or weeks to send messages. Today, with mobile phones and the internet, information can be shared instantly across the world. This has made life easier and faster.

Secondly, technology has enhanced education. Students now have access to online resources, digital libraries, and virtual classes. This helps them learn better and gain knowledge beyond their classrooms.

In addition, technology has improved healthcare. Modern machines help doctors detect diseases early and treat patients effectively. Many lives have been saved through medical advancements.

However, technology also has some disadvantages, such as distraction from social media and cybercrime. Despite these, the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages.

In conclusion, technology has done more good than harm. When used properly, it makes life easier, improves learning, and saves lives. Society should focus on using technology wisely rather than blaming it for its negative effects.

5. My Favorite Place to Relax

My favorite place to relax is a quiet spot under a large mango tree behind our house. It is a peaceful place, far from noise and distractions.

The sight of the green leaves gently swaying in the wind gives me a sense of calm. The ground is usually cool, covered with soft grass, and sometimes fallen mangoes add a pleasant smell to the air. The sunlight filters through the branches, creating beautiful patterns on the ground.

The sounds around this place are soothing. I often hear birds chirping and the soft rustling of leaves. Occasionally, a gentle breeze passes by, making everything feel fresh and alive. These natural sounds help me forget my worries.

Whenever I sit there, I feel relaxed and refreshed. It is a place where I can think clearly, read my books, or simply enjoy the quietness.

I love this place because it gives me peace of mind and helps me regain my strength after a stressful day. It is truly my personal place of comfort.
