Many rivers develop broad flood plains which support farming activities.

A rain gauge is an instrument used for measuring the amount of rainfall received in a place over a given period of time. It consists of a funnel which collects rainwater into a measuring cylinder calibrated in millimetres.

3. (b) State any four precautions when measuring rainfall

i. The rain gauge should be placed in an open space.
ii. It should be fenced to prevent disturbance.
iii. The funnel should be above ground level.
iv. Readings should be taken daily at the same time.

3. (c) How can we get our annual rainfall?

Annual rainfall is obtained by adding together the total rainfall recorded for all the twelve months of the year.

3. (d) State any four importance of measuring rainfall

i. It helps farmers in planning farming activities.
ii. It helps in weather forecasting.
iii. It helps engineers in construction projects.
iv. It helps in flood control and water management.

4. (a) Explain any five factors that affect the temperature of a place

1. Latitude:
Places near the equator receive more heat and are hotter than places farther away.

2. Altitude:
Temperature decreases with increase in height above sea level.

3. Distance from the sea:
Places near the sea experience moderate temperatures while inland areas are hotter.

4. Ocean currents:
Warm currents raise temperatures while cold currents lower temperatures.

5. Cloud cover:
Clouds reduce the amount of heat reaching the earth during the day.

4. (b) State any four importance of weather and climate

i. It influences the type of clothing people wear.
ii. It affects farming activities.
iii. It influences the type of houses built.
iv. It affects transport and communication.

4. (c) If the temperature at the foot of a mountain is 30ºC, what will be the temperature at the top if the height of the mountain is 4500m above sea level?

Temperature falls by 0.6ºC for every 100m rise in height.

4500m ÷ 100m = 45

45 × 0.6ºC = 27ºC

30ºC − 27ºC = 3ºC

Therefore, the temperature at the top of the mountain is 3ºC.

How to Pass Geography Exam Questions for SS2 Second Term

Geography is one subject that becomes very easy when students understand maps, diagrams, climates, relief features, transportation, trade, vegetation and calculations. Many students fail Geography because they try to cram everything without understanding the topics properly. To pass SS2 Geography Second Term examination, you must study wisely and practice regularly.

1. Know the Main Topics for the Term

Focus more on topics like ECOWAS, Nigerian rivers, highland relief, transportation, trade, weather and climate, rainfall, temperature, and environmental hazards. These topics usually appear often in both objective and essay sections.

2. Study with Maps and Diagrams

Geography involves drawing and identifying features. Practice drawing the outline map of Nigeria and West Africa. Learn how to locate rivers, lakes, highlands and important towns. Also practice drawing simple instruments like the rain gauge.

3. Understand Calculations

Do not skip calculation questions. Learn how to calculate:

  • Mean annual rainfall
  • Annual range of temperature
  • Temperature decrease with altitude
  • Total rainfall

Practice many examples until you can solve them without help.

4. Read Definitions and Characteristics

Many Geography questions ask students to explain terms and state characteristics. Learn the meanings of terms like rainfall, weather, climate, trade, transportation and ECOWAS. Also study the characteristics of Nigerian rivers and climatic conditions.

5. Practice Past Questions

Past questions help you know the pattern of examination questions. Solve both objective and essay questions regularly. This will improve your speed and confidence during the examination.

6. Learn Points in Simple Forms

When reading essay topics, write important points in short notes. For example, memorize the aims of ECOWAS, importance of transportation, factors affecting temperature and causes of erosion in simple language.

7. Draw Neat Diagrams

Whenever diagrams are required, draw them neatly and label them correctly. A neat diagram can attract marks easily even before the examiner reads your explanation.
