UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULUM
INTRODUCTION TO THE BDS CURRICULUM
As early as possible, during their orientation and in the early stage of the course, the attention of all dental students should be drawn to the examination regulations. In every subject, with exception of the subjects taught at the preliminary stage, the pass mark will be 50%. To qualify for sitting any part of the examination, a student to be signed up must attain 75% attendance.
Clinical students shall be required to procure minimum number of hand instruments which shall be under their care. Students shall be surcharged for any loss or willful damage of instruments or equipment as may be assigned to them during their training.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVE OF THE DENTAL CURRICULUM, UNIVERSITY OF CALABAR
AIMS
1. The establishment of a scientific foundation sufficient for understanding the principles of dental practice.
2. Acquisition of adequate knowledge, attitude and skill/clinical competence for the performance of various tasks and roles expected of a dental surgeon in the community.
3. Th e ability of the trainees to adapt to any changes or variations in local condition and to offer leadership role and on the job training to other paradental staff.
OBJECTIVES
The Bachelor of Dental Surgery(BDS) graduate, at the end of his/her training, should have acquired adequate clinical competence, skills, knowledge and attitude that will enable him/her to:
1. Function broadly as a general duty dental surgeon in any part of the country or outside Nigeria.
2. Identify the country’s present and future dental problems, collate information that will help him manage or resolve them and implement relevant programme in preventive oral health care.
3. Integrate the practice of preventive dentistry in all his professional work.
4. Diagnose and manage promptly common dental emergencies.
5. Collaborate with a health team and if necessary act as a leader of the team.
6. Have sufficient grounding in basic medical sciences and scientific method so that he/she is capable of benefiting from further vocational training to become a specialist.
7. Ensure the continuous improvement and update of his/her skill and knowledge by continuing self-education, through the selection of appropriate learning and evaluation resources.
8. Perform at a level high enough to be compared with international standards and practice his/her profession always with high ethical and moral standard.
9. Supervise and/or to provide job training for paradental staff under him/her as well as provide good leadership for the entire dental team.
