JAMB Brochure for English Language and Literature

This part of the JAMB brochure shows you the requirements to apply for English Language and Literature under the Faculty of Arts and Humanities in Nigeria. You will see the UTME subject combination needed to apply for the course, O’level requirements for UTME candidates, requirements such A’level, ND, HND, NCE, etc for Direct Entry candidates, as well as other information you require to successfully apply for the course.

  • Abia State University
  • American University of Nigeria
  • Federal University, Wukari
  • Imo State University
  • Nigeria Turkish Nile University
  • Nnamdi Azikiwe University
  • University of Benin
  • University of Ibadan

JAMB UTME Subject Combination

In UTME, note that English Language is mandatory for all courses. The other three subjects required to study English Language and Literature under the Faculty of Arts and Humanities in the institutions listed above are:

Literature-in-English, one other Arts subject and another Arts or Social Science subject.

Special Requirements (Waiver) Remarks

(i) NTNU accepts any three Arts or Social Sciences subjects.

O’Level Requirements for UTME Candidates

To apply for English Language and Literature as a UTME candidate, you require: Five SSCE credit passes to include Literature in English and English Language and three other Arts or Social Science subjects.

Special Requirements (Waiver) Remarks

(i) AUN accepts:

A’ level passes chosen from English Language, Mathematics, Economics, Geography, Government, History, Literature in English, Further Mathematics, Technical Drawing, Visual Arts, Computer Studies, Information Technology, Civics, Environmental Science, Biology, Physics, Chemistry and French.

(ii) UNIBEN accept TCII at merit level.

(iii) UI requires 5 or 6 ‘O’ level credit passes at one or two sittings to include Lit-in-English, English Language, one other Arts subject and any other two or three subjects from Arts, Social Sciences or Science.

(iv) AUN does not offer admissions direct to 200 level programs and may transfer credits relevant to it’s major at the discretion of the Dean of school.

(v) AUN accepts:

a. A’ level passes chosen from English Language, Mathematics, Economics, Geography, Government, History, Literature in English, Further Mathematics, Technical Drawing, Visual Arts, Computer Studies, Information Technology, Civics, Environmental Science, Biology, Physics, Chemistry and French.
b. ND/HND
c. ICGSE and ‘A’ level Cambridge

(vi) AUN does not accept credit passes in the following; Agriculture, Food and Nutrition, Home Economics, Home Craft, Home management, Physical Education, Physical and Health Education, Music, Commerce, Accounting, Financial Accounting, Book keeping, Islamic History, Religious Studies, Tajweed, Library Studies, Diction, Kiswahili, Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, Arabic, Turkish, Study skills.

(vii) NTNU accepts any Arts/Social Science subject.

Requirements for Direct Entry Candidates

To apply for English Language and Literature as a Direct Entry candidate, you require: Two ‘A’ level passes to include Lit.-in-English and one other Arts subject.

Special Requirements (Waiver) Remarks

(i) UNIZIK accept NCE with English major, (Candidates to spend one extra year in UNIZIK).

(ii) IMSU – no direct entry.

(iii) UNIBEN accepts NCE credit in English as main subject.

(iv) UI accepts at least Merit pass in two NCE teaching subjects including English Literature (NOT GENERAL ENGLISH) provided that they meet the basic ‘O’ level requirements. Accepts also2 ‘A’ level subjects to include Literature in English.

(v) NTNU accepts any two A’ level passes in Arts or Social Sciences subjects, ND/HND (lower credit) or NCE (merit) in relevant fields.
