These 49 accredited Federal Universities comprise of Universities of Technology, Universities of Agriculture and Universities of Education domiciled in different states of the federation and the FCT.
Federal Universities Vs. State Universities
Like we already pointed out above, Federal Universities are owned and controlled by the Federal Government. Since Nigeria is a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic country with three or more major religions, Federal Universities are established to engender and promote unity. Their catchment areas span the entire country making possible for students from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds to meet and share belief and values. This promotes federal character and expands intra-cultural ethics in the country.
On the other hand, State Universities are owned and controlled by state governments. They mostly give greater priority to their indigenes and tend to favour them more than others. Some state universities give lower cut-off marks and even school fees to their indigenes. They claim it is an effort geared towards encouraging their people to be education in order to stand a good chance at the national level.
Advantages of Federal Universities Over State Universities
Below are the reasons why Federal Universities are better than State Universities.
- Cheaper Tuition: Federal Universities are generally cheaper than their state-owned counterparts. Most State Universities are way too expensive. This is the major reason why there is an incredible rush to Federal Universities, no thanks to the harsh economic realities in Nigeria.
- More Facilities and Infrastructures: Federal Universities are better funded and are equipped with more infrastructural facilities such as laboratories, digital libraries, auditoriums, lecture theatres, engineering workshops and so on. These make learning easier.
- Cultural Diversity: Unlike state universities which tend to prioritize their indigenes, Federal Universities admit more students, especially from different cultural backgrounds. That is why Federal Universities are centers for the promotion of unity in diversity.
- Best Lecturers: Since the federal government is the highest employer of labour in the country, many professors and academic doctors are employed in the Federal Universities.
