I will close the article by giving you the list of universities that accept 140, 150, 160, 170 and 180 cut off mark.
Let me start by giving you some key information concerning the subject matter of our discourse today.
The major determinant of a student’s admission chances is his or her performance in two or three key examinations. One is UTME, the next is Post-UTME while the last is SSCE.
So whether or not a student will gain admission into their dream school to study their dream course depends on their performance in the three exams.
Students take the SSCE first, although some schools don’t use the grade points for calculating candidates’ aggregate scores. However, if you are yet to write SSCE, it is important to strive to make As and Bs in your core subjects.
More so, your JAMB score is a major determinant of your admission chances. In other words, the higher your UTME score, the higher your admission chances.

What is the Meaning of JAMB Cut Off Mark?
JAMB cut off mark is the minimum score you must get in your UTME in order to qualify for admission via the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS).
This cut off mark varies for federal universities, state universities, polytechnics and Colleges of Education; and is referred to as the JAMB general cut off mark.
JAMB and other stakeholders determine this general cut off mark every year in a policy meeting.
However, depending on the level of competition for a particular school, they can place their own JAMB cut off mark above the general cut off but never below it. They have the permission of JAMB to do so if they need to.
Less competitive schools, especially the private universities, bring their JAMB cut off marks as low as possible but never below the general JAMB cut off mark. They do so in order to admit as many students as possible.

How JAMB Fixes the General Cut Off Marks Every Year
There is what we call JAMB Policy Meeting. It is a meeting conducted by JAMB several weeks after the release of UTME results. The meeting always has in attendance the Minister of Education, JAMB Registrar, representatives of all tertiary institutions in Nigeria and other stakeholders.
In the JAMB Policy meeting, the participants determine the general cut off marks considering the number of registered candidates, their overall performance and the available admission spaces in all institutions.
Whatever marks they determine as cut off are binding on all institutions. This means that no institution would be allowed to set their own cut off mark below the limit. Otherwise, we would have some schools setting cut off marks as low as 90, 100, 110, 120 and so on.

This is a key takeaway from this post so far. And don’t forget that the various institutions have the right to place their cut off marks above JAMB’s general cut-off mark but never below it.
The implication is that any candidate whose UTME score is below 140 cannot gain admission in any Nigerian University in 2024. However, the fact that a candidate’s score is above 140 is not a guarantee that they will be given the opportunity to sit for Post UTME or be admitted. It now depends on how competitive the candidate’s prospective university is and what they have decided to use as their cut off mark.
The same truth is applicable to polytechnics and Colleges of Education.

2024 JAMB Cut off Mark for Private Universities in Nigeria
Relatively speaking, Nigerian private universities are not competitive. This means that most JAMB candidates do not apply to them via JAMB portal. Their reasons may not be too far from exorbitant school fees, accreditation issues and so on.
So most private universities prefer to just stick with the general JAMB cut off mark. Some may even want to go below the general JAMB cut off mark for universities if it were possible.
Private University Cut off Marks for 2024
The cut off mark of most private universities in Nigeria for 2024/2024 admission is 140. So if your UTME score 140 or above, you can buy JAMB Change of Institution Form to apply for any private university of your choice.

Difference Between JAMB Cut Off Mark and Departmental Cut Off Mark for Courses
Recall that general JAMB cut off marks are determined during JAMB policy meetings, although schools are at liberty to raise their own cut off marks above the general.
But beyond the JAMB cut off mark, there is what is called the departmental cut off mark for different courses. Again, it is the school that fixes the departmental cut off marks for courses considering their carrying capacity and the performance of the candidates.
For example, the JAMB cut off mark for UNIBEN is 200 but the departmental cut off mark for courses like Medicine, Pharmacy and Law, is not 200. No, it can’t be now…
Here’s the explanation.
If your prospective school is UNIBEN and you scored 200 in JAMB, your JAMB score can allow you to participate in the school’s Post UTME examination. But that does not mean that you can get merit admission into a course like Medicine in UNIBEN with a JAMB score of 200. Actually, that’s practical impossible except you do some other magic with money.
The reason is because the departmental cut off marks for courses depend on your JAMB score, Post UTME score and sometimes, O’level grade points.
How to Calculate Aggregate Score for Courses
For this section, I will assume that your prospective school is one of those that judge candidate’s qualification for admission based solely on JAMB score and Post UTME score.
In that case, you must wait to write the school’s Post UTME and see your result before you can accurately calculate your aggregate.
To calculate your aggregate, first divide your JAMB score by 8.
Thereafter, you divide your Post UTME score by 2.
Then add the two resultant quotients together to get your aggregate score.
Here’s an example to illustrate the process:
Assuming that a candidate aspiring to study pharmacy in UNILAG scored 286 in JAMB and then 82 in the school’s Post UTME, he can calculate his aggregate score like this…
(286 ÷ 8) + (82 ÷ 2) = 35.75 + 41 = 76.75
From the above illustration, you can see that your aggregate score depends on both your JAMB score and Post UTME score. And the higher your scores in the two exams, the higher your aggregate and the higher your admission chances.
So you must endeavor to get high scores in both JAMB and Post UTME in order to exceed the cut off mark for your course.
Note, however, that this computation would be different if your prospective school also considers SSCE grade points. For example, University of Lagos (UNILAG) uses JAMB score, Post UTME score and O’level grade points to calculate candidates aggregate score.
