O Level Subject Combination for Science & Art Courses

On this post, we are going to be looking closely at O Level Subject Combination for Science & Art Courses. The reason why we consider it very important is because having the right O’level subject combinations is a criterion for gaining admission into tertiary institution in Nigeria. So we are going to be showing you the subjects you must credit in your SSCE for the course you are planning to study in the university or polytechnic.

O level subject combination for science and arts

Meaning of O Level Subject Combination

O’level subjects are the totality of the subjects offered by students in senior secondary schools. However, O level subject combination are about five subjects that a student must offer and credit in SSCE if they must study certain courses in the university.

So science courses like Medicine and Surgery, Pharmacy, and Engineering have their specific O level subject combination. The same is true of art courses like Mass Communication, Law, Public Administration and so on.

In the next two sections, we’ll show you the O’level subject combinations for science and art courses. If you are still in secondary school and you plan to study any of the courses below, you must endeavor to meet the required subject combination in your SSCE.

O Level Subject Combinations for Science Courses

The following table gives the O level subject combination for science courses.

1.BIOCHEMISTRYFive ‘O’ level Credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and other science subject.
2.MICROBIOLOGYFive ‘O’ level Credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Physics.
3.ALL ENGINEERING COURSESFive O’ level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and any other relevant subject.
4.ARCHITECTURESSSC or its equivalent with credit in Mathematics, English Language, Physics and any two of the following: Chemistry, Tech. Drawing, Building Const., Woodwork, Fine Art, Geography, Economics.
5.SURVEYING AND GEOINORMATICSSenior Secondary School Certificate (SSSC) or its equivalent with five credits including Mathematics, Physics, English Language.
6.MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE5 O’ level passes in SSC/GCE/NECO in the following: English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. (these are compulsory).
7.MEDICAL REHABILITATION5 O’ level passes in SSC/GCE/NECO in the following: English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. (these are compulsory).
8.MEDICAL RADIOGRAPHY5 O’ level passes in SSC/GCE/NECO in the following: English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. (these are compulsory).
 9.NURSING SCIENCEFive O level credit passes in Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and English Language in not more than two sittings in SSCE or its equivalent.
 10.MEDICAL SCIENCESFive O’ level Credit passes in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, English Language at one sitting.
 11.DENTISTRYCandidates are expected to have credit passes in English Language, Biology, Chemistry Mathematics and Physics in SSCE at the O’ level in not more than one sitting
 12.PHARMACYFive O’ level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology in not more than two sittings.
 13.PURE & INDUSTRIAL CHEMISTRYFive O’ level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology/ Agricultural Science
 14.GEOLOGYFive O’ level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology/ Agricultural Science
 15.PHYSICS & ASTRONOMYFive ‘O’ level Credit passes in Physics, Mathematics and English Language as well as two (2) other credit passes from Agricultural Science, Biology, further mathematics, statistics, Technical drawing and Geography at SSCE/GCE/NECO or its equivalent. A pass in Chemistry is acceptable.
 16.STATISTICSFive O’ level credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics and at least two subjects from Physics, Statistics, Chemistry, Further Mathematics, Economics and Geography.
 17.COMPUTER SCIENCEFive O’ level credit passes to include Mathematics, English Language,  Physics and any two from Chemistry, Biology, Agricultural science and Economics.
 18.VETERINARY MEDICINEFive credit level passes to include: English Language, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Biology at SSCE/GCE or an equivalent examination.
 19.NUTRITION AND DIETETICSCandidates must have obtained credits in the O/L subjects (Chemistry, Biology or Food and Nutrition or Agricultural Science and Physics or Mathematics).
 20.AGRIC ECONOMICSFive ‘O’ level credit passes in subjects which must include English Language, Biology/or Agricultural Science, Chemistry and either Mathematics, or Physics

O Level Subject Combinations for Art Courses

The following table gives the O level subject combination for art courses.

2.HISTORY/INTERNATIONAL STUDIESO’ level with a minimum of five credits which must include History or Government and English Language.
3.FINE AND APPLIED ARTSFive ‘O’ level credit passes to include Fine/Applied Arts and English Language and one Science subject.
4.MASS COMMUNICATIONFive ‘O’ level credit passes including English Language and Literature in English and at least a pass in Mathematics
5.ACCOUNTANCYFive ‘O’ level credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any other two relevant subjects.
6.BANKING AND FINANCEFive O’ level credits to include: English Language, Mathematics and any other relevant subjects.
7.BUSINESS MANAGEMENTFive O’ level credits including English, Mathematics, Economics, plus any of Accounting, Business Methods, Commerce, Government, Geography and Statistics.
 8.MARKETINGFive O’ level credit passes including English Language, Mathematics and any three relevant subjects
 9.URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING5 credit level passes at SSC to include English Language, Mathematics, and any other three subjects from Economics, Governments, Fine Arts.
 10.ESTATE MANAGEMENTCredit level pass in 5 subjects in not more than two sittings in Mathematics, English Language, Economics and any other two subjects of which, one must be a science subject.
 11.LAWFive O’ level credit passes to include English Language and Literature-in-English.
 12.ECONOMICSFive ‘O’ level Credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Economics and two other relevant subjects at WASC or GCE O’ level.
 13.POLITICAL SCIENCEFive O’ level credit passes which must include English Language, government or History and three other subjects and at least a pass in Mathematics.
 14.PSYCHOLOGYFive O’ level credits passes which must include English Language, Biology/Health Science and at least a pass in Mathematics or Statistics.
 15.SOCIOLOGY AND ANTHROPOLOGYFive O’ level credit passes which must include English Language, Government or History and any three Arts or Social Science subjects.
 16.SOCIAL WORKFive O’ level credit passes which must include English Language and any three Arts or Social Science Subjects.
 17.PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTCredit level pass in English Language, Government or History and Mathematics at SSCE or GCE O’ level.
 18.THEATRE ARTSFive ‘O’ level credit passes to include English language and Literature-in-English, a pass in either Fine and Applied Arts/Music and a credit level pass in at least one science subject at WASCE or its equivalents
 19.RELIGIONFive O’ level Credit passes which must include English Language, Religious Studies and a Science subject.
 20.ARTS EDUCATIONFive ‘O’ level credit passes to include the subjects to be combined with Education and a credit or its equivalent in English Language at SSCE or its equivalent.

Conclusion

This post is obviously not exhaustive. There are many more courses whose O’level subject combinations are not covered here.
