SECTION A: COMPREHENSION – PASSAGE I

INSTRUCTION: Carefully read the following passage and then answer the questions on it.

In recent years, social media has become very popular among young people. Many under-aged students now spend a lot of time on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Tiktok. These platforms allow users to communicate, share pictures, watch videos, and make new friends. While social media has some benefits, its excessive use by under-aged students is becoming a serious concern in education.

Many students who are supposed to focus on their studies spend several hours chatting and watching videos online. As a result, they often neglect their homework, reading time, and other academic activities. Some students even stay awake late at night using their phones which makes them tired and unable to concentrate is school the next day. The habit can lead to poor academic performance.

Another negative effect of social media is distraction. Students may intend to use their phones for educational purposes, but they often end up browsing entertainment contents instead. This reduces their productivity and interest in school work.

However, there are possible solutions to this problem. Parents and teachers should guide students on the proper use of technology. They should also limit the amount of time children spend on social media. Schools can organize educational programs to teach students about the dangers of social self-discipline and focus more on activities that improve their academic performance.

COMPREHENSION – PASSAGE II

Read the passage carefully and answer questions 6 – 10 that follow it.

The decline in reading culture among secondary school students in Nigeria is alarming and has contributed significantly to falling academic standards. Many students prioritize social media, video, games, and other distractions over reading, leading to poor comprehension skills, limited vocabulary and reduced critical thinking abilities. This lack of reading habit affects performance in examinations, as students struggle with complex texts and questions. It also hampers communications skills, making it hard for students to express themselves effectively.

Furthermore, a weak reading culture limits students’ exposure to knowledge, ideas and perspectives, stunting their intellectual growth. Libraries are often underutilized, and reading is not encouraged as a hobby.

The situation is worsened by the lack of role models and the abundance of digital distractions. To reverse this trend, schools and parents must promote reading, provide access to books, and create a reading friendly environment. Encouraging book clubs, storytelling and discussions can also help instill a love for reading. Schools can organize reading competitions book fairs and author-talks to make reading more engaging. Parents can set aside dedicated reading time at home and lead by example. By working together, we can cultivate a generation of readers and thinkers.

LETTER WRITING

12, School Road,
Enugu State.
5th October, 2027.

Dear Chinedu,

How are you doing? I hope you and your family are fine. I am writing to tell you about my experiences in my new school and how different it is from our former school.

When I first arrived at my new school, I felt nervous because everything looked strange to me. However, I soon became comfortable because the students and teachers were friendly. My new school is much bigger than our former school. It has a large compound, a well-equipped science laboratory, a computer room and a good library. The classrooms are also spacious and well ventilated.

Another thing I noticed is that the teachers in my new school give students enough time to ask questions. There are also many clubs and sporting activities. I have joined the Literary and Debating Society, and I am enjoying it very much.

The state is also different from our former state. The people here have a different culture and speak a different local language. I have tasted some new foods and visited interesting places.

Although I miss our old school and our friends, I am enjoying my new environment. I wish you could visit me during the next holiday.

Yours sincerely,
Henry

Why I Choose to Be a Doctor

Everyone has a dream about what he or she wants to become in the future. My dream is to become a doctor. I chose this profession because I want to save lives, help sick people and make my family proud.

One of the main reasons I want to become a doctor is because I love helping people. Whenever I see someone who is sick or suffering, I always wish I could do something to help. Doctors play an important role in society because they treat sick people and help them to live healthy lives.

I also want to become a doctor because the profession is respected and rewarding. A good doctor does not only give medicine to patients but also advises them on how to prevent diseases. I would like to work in a hospital where I can attend to patients and give them hope when they are sick.

To achieve my dream, I know that I must study hard, especially in subjects like Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. I must also be disciplined, patient and hardworking.

I believe that becoming a doctor will give me the opportunity to serve humanity and contribute positively to my country. This is why I have chosen to become a doctor.
