But that would definitely be after telling you what passive income means and why you need it as an individual living in modern society.
Table of Contents
What is Passive Income?
Passive income, otherwise referred to as residual income, is the opposite of active income. Of course, you know that active income is the money you are paid for the work you do continuously. For example, you job or career.
This implies that passive income is money you earn without necessarily working actively for it. Yes, you may put in some efforts but usually, the effort is very little.
Sometimes, passive income may be about finding ways to make your money work for you. At some other times, it may be about using your skills to set up cash-flow systems that trickle money into your account while you are away or focused on other things.
Why You Need Passive Income as an Individual
As an individual living in any modern society anywhere in the world, there are several reasons why you need sources of passive income. Notice that the word, “sources” is in plural form. This means that when we are talking about passive income, the sources should be multiple.
Here are a few reasons why you need multiple sources of passive income:
1. It helps to reduce your risks:
Having multiple sources of passive income helps to reduce your risk of going bankrupt if you lose your main job. So if one stream of income dries up, you fall back on other streams to pay your bills and save.
2. It helps you to achieve your goals in life:
If you must achieve your goals and dreams in life, having money is very essential. If you need to pay off some bills, or maybe buy a house or car or something, having multiple sources of passive income would make it all easy and stress-free. You don’t have to waste time or go through the mental stress of worrying, planning and adjusting for want of money.
3. Ever-increasing cost of living:
Irrespective of the country or city you live in and how robust the economy is, cost of living increase with every passing day. That is what economists refer to as inflation. This affects the prices of essential goods and services.
Your salary cannot keep up with inflation. You need multiple sources of passive income if you must have enough money to pay your bills and afford the groceries.
4. Gives you financial security:
Having multiple sources of passive income would give you a measure of financial security in the face of rapid changes in the work place. The employer can lay you off for one reason or the other. If such happens, you will have one or more things to fall back on.
More so, if you continue in your regular job, you will retire some day. And by then, you would no longer have the physical strength you currently have. You may not be able to work as hard as you are working now. Actually, you would need to work less. Then, your multiple sources of passive income will ensure that you have enough money to sustain you.
5. Helps you to achieve financial independence:
Whatever financial independence means to you, having multiple sources of passive income is the fastest way to achieve it.

How to Make Passive Income
There are many ways to make passive income whether your thinking about working online or offline. However, I am going to be focusing more on online streams of passive income.
The key secret to making passive income online is to identify a potential source of income, and then create a product or invest in an asset that will generate income with minimal ongoing effort.
As you shall discover when I give you passive income ideas, some sources of passive income may require some upfront work and investment. But you can be rest assured that they can provide you a good source of passive income over time.
More so, it is a good idea to diversify your investments to reduce risk and maximize your potential returns.
Seven (7) Passive Income Ideas
In furtherance of all I’ve said so far, I will give you seven (7) passive income ideas that will help you to earn money online….
- Invest in stocks or real estate.
- Create and sell an online courses.
- Write and sell eBooks online.
- Rent out a spare room on Airbnb.
- Create and sell a physical or digital product on Etsy.
- Create and sell a physical or digital product on Amazon.
- Start a blog or YouTube channel.
There you have all seven.
In the following sections, I will take some time to give you insight into each of the seven passive income ideas so that you can take advantage of them for your financial freedom.
1. Invest in Stocks and Real Estate
Investing in stocks can be a great way to grow your wealth over the long term. When you buy a stock, you are essentially buying a small piece of ownership in a company. If the company does well, its stock price will typically rise, and you can sell your shares for a profit.
There are many different factors to consider when choosing which stocks to invest in. On account of that, it is very important to do your research before making any decisions. It’s also a good idea to diversify your portfolio by investing in a variety of different companies and industries to reduce your risk.
Investing in real estate is a potent passive income idea and can be a great way to grow your wealth. When you invest in real estate, you are purchasing a physical asset that has the potential to appreciate in value over time. You can also earn money from your investment by collecting rent from tenants.
There are many different ways to invest in real estate. These include: buying a rental property, investing in a real estate investment trust (REIT), or participating in a crowdfunding platform.
For the fact that there are several available options to explore when it comes to investing in real estate, I will repeat the advice I gave you earlier. And that is the need to do proper research on each prospect before making any decisions.
2. Create and Sell an Online Course
Creating and selling online courses is my second passive income idea. It can be a great way to share your knowledge and expertise with others while also generating income.
Creating online courses can be a herculean task but I won’t leave you without practical steps to simplify the process. Here are some steps to consider:
i. Identify your target audience
This is the first and most important step to creating and marketing a course online. So before you start creating your course, take out some time to identify whom you are creating it for. Doing this will help you to tailor the content of your course to the specific needs and interests of your target audience. It will also help you in marketing the course rightly.
ii. Create a course outline
Once you know who your course is for, you can start creating an outline of the topics you will cover. This will help you organize your content and ensure that it is comprehensive and well-structured.
iii. Develop your course content
This is the stage at which you will create the actual content for your course. In order to create a rich course, you may consider a combination of video lectures, written materials, and other interactive elements.
iv. Choose the right platform for hosting your course
Considering the fact that there are many hosting platforms out there, it is important to carefully choose the right one for your course.
Obviously, the right hosting platform would be the one that best fits your needs, budget and the needs of your target audience.
Some of the available hosting platforms for online courses include Udemy, Skillshare, Teachable and so on.
v. Promote your course
If your target audience are not aware that a course such as yours exists, they won’t place an order. And if they don’t order, you won’t sell.
So once your course is ready, you’ll need to promote it to your target audience. You can do this by creating marketing materials such as a landing page or sales page and promoting your course through social media and other online channels.
vi. Sell your course
Once you have promoted your course to your target audience and generated their interest, you can start selling. Of course, the sales can be carried out via your hosting platform or through your own website if you have one.
vii. Provide support and engagement
After you have sold your course, it’s important to provide support and engagement to your students. This can include answering questions, providing feedback and offering additional resources and materials. This will help ensure that your students have a positive experience and are able to get the most out of your course.
3. Write and Sell eBooks Online
An ebook is essentially a book in electronic form that can be read on the computer or mobile device rather than in print. If you are skillful in writing, writing and selling ebooks online is a great passive income idea to consider.
Just like developing an online course, writing ebooks involves some important steps. Here are a few of them:
i. Choose a topic
The first step in writing and selling an ebook is to choose a topic that you are knowledgeable and passionate about. This will help you create content that is engaging and valuable to your readers.
ii. Outline your book
Once you have chosen a topic, create an outline for your book. This will help you organize your thoughts and ensure that your book is well-structured and easy to follow.
iii. Write your book
Start writing your book using the outline you created. This can be done using a word processing program, such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs.
iv. Edit and proofread your book
Once you have finished writing your book, edit and proofread it to ensure that it is free of errors and flows well.
v. Choose a platform for publishing your ebook
There are many platforms available for publishing ebooks. Some of such ebook publishing platforms include Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing, Kobo Writing Life, Apple Books and so on. Choose the one that best fits your needs and the needs of your target audience.
vi. Format your ebook
Once you have chosen a publishing platform, you will need to format your ebook to meet the platform’s specific requirements. This can involve converting your ebook to a specific file format such as MOBI or EPUB, and adding any necessary metadata, such as the book’s title, author and description.
vii. Promote your ebook
Once your ebook is published, you’ll need to promote it to your target audience. Otherwise, they may not be aware that such book exists.
Promoting your ebook may involve creating marketing materials such as a landing page or sales page and promoting your ebook through social media and other online channels.
viii. Sell your ebook
Once you have promoted your ebook and generated the interest of your target audience, you can start selling. This can be done through your ebook’s publishing platform or through your own website if you have one.
ix. Provide support and engagement
After you have sold your ebook, it’s important to provide support and engagement to your readers. This can include answering questions, providing feedback and offering additional resources. This will help ensure that your readers have a positive experience and are able to get the most out of your ebook.
4. Rent Out a Spare Room on Airbnb
If you have a spare room in your home, you may be able to earn extra money by renting it out on Airbnb. To do this, you will need to create a listing on the Airbnb website or app. You will need to provide information about your space, including photos, a description and the amenities you offer. You will also need to set a price for your rental and determine how you want to handle bookings and communication with guests.
Once your listing is live, you can start receiving booking requests from potential guests. It’s important to keep in mind that renting out your space on Airbnb may subject you to local regulations and laws. So it’s a good idea to check with your city or municipality to make sure you are in compliance. Additionally, you will need to consider how renting out your space will impact your insurance coverage. You may need to purchase additional insurance to protect yourself and your property.
5. Create and Sell a Physical or Digital Product on Etsy
To create and sell a physical or digital product on Etsy, you’ll need to first create an account on Etsy.com. Once you’ve created your account, you can start by creating a listing for your product. To create a listing, you’ll need to provide a title and description for your product, as well as pricing information and at least one photo of your product. You’ll also need to choose a category for your product, so that buyers can easily find it when browsing.
Once your listing is live, you can start promoting your product on social media, forums and other online platforms to drive traffic to your Etsy shop. You can also use Etsy’s built-in marketing tools, such as promoted listings, to reach a wider audience.
When you make a sale, Etsy will process the payment and handle the transaction for you. You’ll then be responsible for packing and shipping the product to the buyer, or delivering the digital product if it is a digital download.
It’s important to note that Etsy charges a listing fee and a transaction fee for each sale you make. These fees are in addition to any payment processing fees charged by the payment processor you use, such as PayPal or Stripe. You’ll need to factor these fees into your pricing when setting the price for your product.
Overall, creating and selling a product on Etsy can be a great way to reach a large audience and start your own online business. With a little creativity, hard work and dedication, you can build a successful shop on Etsy and start making sales.
6. Create and Sell a Physical or Digital Product on Amazon
To create and sell a physical or digital product on Amazon, you will need to first create an account on Amazon as a seller. Once you have created your account, you will need to list your product on the Amazon marketplace. This will involve creating a product listing, which includes details such as the product title, description, price and product images.
Once your product is listed on Amazon, you can start selling it to customers. You will need to manage your inventory and fulfill orders as they come in. You can also use Amazon’s advertising tools to promote your product and reach a wider audience.
Selling on Amazon can be a great way to reach a large audience and make a profit. However, it is important to research the market and understand the competition before launching your product. You will also need to ensure that your product meets Amazon’s quality standards and complies with their policies.
7. Start a Blog or YouTube Channel
Starting a blog or YouTube channel is the last passive income idea I’d share with you. A blog or YouTube channel is a great way to share your thoughts, ideas and interests with the world and earn money in the process.
If you’re passionate about a particular topic, starting a blog or YouTube channel can be a great way to connect with others who share your interests, and to potentially reach a wider audience.
Here are a few steps you can follow to start a blog or YouTube channel:
i. Choose a niche
Before you start a blog or YouTube channel, it’s important to decide what you want to focus on. Pick a niche that you’re passionate about and that you think others will be interested in. This will help you stay motivated and engaged, and will make it easier for you to create content that your audience will enjoy.
ii. Choose a platform
There are many different platforms you can use to start a blog; examples include WordPress, Blogger and so on. Each platform has its own unique features and tools, so it’s important to choose the one that best suits your needs and goals.
iii. Create your content
Once you’ve chosen a topic and a platform, it’s time to start creating your content. For a blog, this might involve writing articles or creating videos. For a YouTube channel, this might involve creating and editing videos. Whatever your chosen medium, the key is to create content that are interesting, engaging and informative.
iv. Promote your content
Once you’ve created your content, it’s important to promote it to reach your audience. This can involve sharing your content on social media, participating in online communities related to your topic and reaching out to other bloggers or YouTubers to collaborate.
