O level requirements

My goal in making this post is to eradicate ignorance in the area. Ignorance is one of the several reasons why candidates miss out admission opportunities. They are largely ignorant of admission procedures of Nigerian tertiary institutions.

Meaning of O’level Requirement for Admission

O’Level Requirement for Admission into a particular course refers to the specific subjects that students must pass at credit level in order to qualify to gain admission into the course.

That’s what this post is all about. As usual, I advise that you pay attention to the vital information here before proceeding with your registration for 2024 JAMB Examination. [By the way, you can click >>This link<< to get Detailed Registration Instructions & Guidelines as regards 2024/2025 JAMB’s CBT Examination].

Usually, there are five relevant subjects with prospective Nigerian university students must pass at credit level in order to gain admission; and this is irrespective of the course or department they are vying for. The credit level pass in five relevant subjects must be obtained from WAEC, NECO, NABTEB or any other such body.

O’level Requirement for Science Courses

For the Science students who plan to pursue courses like Medicine, Engineering, Nursing, Pharmacy and so on, it is required that they possess a minimum of 5 O’level credit level passes in the following subjects: English language, Biology, Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics.

However, there may be a waiver on either Biology or Mathematics depending on the field of sciences the student is going into. Some Engineering and Physical Science courses don’t specifically demand a credit pass in Biology. For such courses, a pass in Biology is enough. In the same vein, some Medical and Biological Science courses don’t specifically demand a credit pass in Mathematics. For such courses, a pass in Math is enough.

Hint: You must credit the required O’level subjects in not more than two sittings. The implication of this is that you cannot combine more than two Olevel results. Note however, that Medical science faculties in some federal schools like UNN do not allow for combination of results. They insist that you must make your results in one sitting.

So you need to find out how to meet the O’level requirement for your prospective course and do what it takes to meet it.

How to Meet the O’level Requirement for Science Courses

To meet the O’level requirements for Science courses, you need to be intentional as a student. You must plan your O’level subject choices carefully.

Here are some tips that can help you to meet the requirements:

1. Start planning your O’level subjects early enough

Get in touch with your school’s guidance and counselor to ensure that your subject choices are in line with your career goals. You need to be sure that the subjects you want to offer meet the O’level entry requirements of your prospective faculty.

2. Research about specific course requirements

Beyond the O’level requirements for faculties, you need to research about the specific requirement of the course you want to study. You can find relevant information JAMB brochures or from the official website of your prospective university.

3. Consider your interests and strengths

In making the choice of faculty and course, some of the primary factors you need to consider are your interests and strength. If you choose a faculty and course that align with your interests and strength, meeting the O’level requirements would be easy and fun.

4. Study and prepare adequately

After choosing subjects in line with the O’level requirements of your course and faculty, the next thing is to study and prepare well for SSCE. The Senior School Certificate Examinations conducted by WAEC and NECO are standard external exams. They can be very technical and challenging, and you need to credit most of them.

So it’s important that you study and prepare diligently. Buy and make use of recommended textbooks and seek support in areas where you are deficient. You can join a study group, get some study partners or even employ a private teacher.
