I will also show you how to meet the requirements.

O level requirements

My goal in making this post is to eradicate ignorance in the area. Ignorance is one of the several reasons why candidates miss out admission opportunities. They are largely ignorant of admission procedures of Nigerian tertiary institutions.

Meaning of O’level Requirement for Admission

O’Level Requirement for Admission into a particular course refers to the specific subjects that students must pass at credit level in order to qualify to gain admission into the course.

That’s what this post is all about. As usual, I advise that you pay attention to the vital information here before proceeding with your registration for 2024 JAMB Examination. [By the way, you can click the provided link to get Detailed Registration Instructions & Guidelines as regards 2024/2025 JAMB’s CBT Examination].

Usually, there are five relevant subjects with prospective Nigerian university students must pass at credit level in order to gain admission; and this is irrespective of the course or department they are vying for. The credit level pass in five relevant subjects must be obtained from WAEC, NECO, NABTEB or any other such body.

O’level Requirement for Art Courses

For the arts students who plan to pursue courses like Archaeology, Linguistics, Mass Comm., and so on, it is required that they possess a minimum of 5 O’level credit level passes in the following subjects: English language, Literature in English, Mathematics and any other two Arts/Social Science subjects.

However, there may be a waiver on Mathematics as many art courses do not specifically demand a credit pass in Math. For many art subjects, a pass in Math is all that is required.

For specialized art courses such as Fine Arts or Visual Arts, a credit pass in Cultural and Creative Arts is crucial.

Depending on the specific art course, you may be required to have a credit pass in subjects like Economics, Geography, Government and Civic Education.

O’level Requirements for Commercial Courses

Commercial students planning to pursue courses like Accounting, Banking and Finance, Business Administration and the rest must note the following.

1. Just like in Art courses, English is a foundational requirement for commercial courses. So a credit level pass is required in O’level English.

2. Mathematics is a core subject for commercial courses. So a credit level pass is also necessary.

Then you also need to credit Economics, Commerce and any other relevant subjects to make up the five required subjects for commercial courses.

O’level Requirements for Social Science Courses

Social Science students who plan to pursue courses like Economics, Political Science, Psychology and the rest must note the following:

1. Like Art and Commercial courses, Social Science courses require a credit pass in English Language. This is to ensure that the incoming students can effectively communicate and analyze complex ideas.

2. Many Social Science courses may accept a pass in Mathematics. But some, especially those with a statistical or quantitative component, may require a credit pass in Math.

You also need a credit level pass in subjects like Economics, Government, Geography and any other relevant subjects necessary to make up the required five O’level subjects for Social Science courses.

Hint: You must credit the required O’level subjects in not more than two sittings. The implication of this is that you cannot combine more than two O’level results. So you need to find out how to meet the O’level requirement for your prospective course and do what it takes to meet it.

How to Meet the O’level Requirement for Art, Commercial and Social Science Courses

To meet the O’level requirements for arts, commercial and social science courses, you need to be intentional as a student. You must plan your O’level subject choices carefully.

Here are some tips that can help you to meet the requirements:

1. Start planning your O’level subjects early enough

Get in touch with your school’s guidance and counselor to ensure that your subject choices are in line with your career goals. You need to be sure that the subjects you want to offer meet the O’level entry requirements of your prospective faculty.

2. Research about specific course requirements

Beyond the O’level requirements for faculties, you need to research about the specific requirement of the course you want to study. You can find relevant information JAMB brochures or from the official website of your prospective university.

3. Consider your interests and strengths

In making the choice of faculty and course, some of the primary factors you need to consider are your interests and strength. If you choose a faculty and course that align with your interests and strength, meeting the O’level requirements would be easy and fun.

4. Study and prepare adequately

After choosing subjects in line with the O’level requirements of your course and faculty, the next thing is to study and prepare well for SSCE. Senior School Certificate Examinations conducted by WAEC and NECO are standard external exams. They can be very technical and challenging, and you need to credit most of them.

So it’s important that you study and prepare diligently. Buy and make use of recommended textbooks and seek support in areas where you are deficient. You can join a study group, get some study partners or even employ a private teacher.

Alright.

So you have it all up there. But there is another very important thing you must give due consideration to and that is the issue of UTME subject combination. Over the years, this has been one of the several, heartbreaking causes of admission failure. You can check the four correct UTME subjects for your prospective course via the provided link on this website.
