Course Duration for Banking and Finance

Banking and Finance is a four year course for candidates who gain admission via the UTME mode. But those admitted via Direct Entry study it for three years. So the course duration for Banking and Finance varies depending on your mode of entry.

The correct JAMB subject combination for Banking and Finance is Use of English, Mathematics, Economics plus one of Government and Geography.

Now, let me explain this a little bit.

Test of Use of English is compulsory for all JAMB candidates regardless of their prospective course. Hence, it is already an automatic part of the subjects required for Banking and Finance in JAMB.

But for Banking and Finance aspirants, there are two other compulsory subjects. They are Mathematics and Economics. Please make no mistakes about this. If you must be admitted to study Banking and Finance in a Nigerian tertiary institution, you must write Use of English, Mathematics and Economics.

The candidate can select any one of the following arts or social sciences subjects to make up the subjects for Banking and Finance in JAMB: Government and Geography.

This means that you can pick any one subject from the list above to complete your JAMB subjects for Banking and Finance. If you are wise, you will select your best out of the two.

Typically for most aspirants, the subjects needed to study Banking and Finance are Use of English, Mathematics, Economics and Government.

(i) UNIZIK does not accept Geography.

(ii) ESUT, UNN, OOU – Mathematics, Economics, plus any social science subject.

(iii) IGBINEDION accept Commerce in lieu of Economics. UNILAG accepts Economics, Mathematics and any Science, Social Science or Arts subject.

(iv) UNICAL does not accept Commerce and CRK as UTME subjects.

(v) AUN requires Mathematics, plus any other subjects from the following; Economics, Geography, Government, History, Literature in English, Further Mathematics, Technical Drawing, Visual Arts, Computer Studies, Information Technology, Civics, Environmental Science, Biology, Physics, Chemistry and French.

(vi) EVANGEL requires Mathematics, Economics and any other subject.

Other Courses you Can Study with JAMB Subject Combination for Banking and Finance

There are several other courses that have the same JAMB subject combination as Banking and Finance. In other words, you can choose the same JAMB subject combination for Banking and Finance when applying for any of them. More so, you can confidently apply for them for supplementary admission in case you missed merit admission for Banking and Finance.

You must also meet the necessary O’level requirements. This means that you must have credited the necessary subjects in your SSCE in order to qualify for admission. Otherwise, you will not be offered admission.

You want to ask what are the subjects needed for Banking and Finance in WAEC? In other words, what is the right WAEC subject combination for a secondary school student who wishes to study Banking and Finance?

The table below gives the nine subjects required for Banking and Finance in WAEC:

Institution-specific Requirements on WAEC Subjects for Banking and Finance

(i) ABU does not accept a combination of Local Languages and Religious Knowledge.

(ii) BIU, AAUA, UNIUYO, UNIZIK, ESUT, EKSU, IMSU, UNIPORT and UNILAG require credit in Economics and two other subjects.

(iii) IMSU and BIU accept credit/merit in English Language in TC II.

(iv) UNIPORT requires Economics and does not accept commercial subjects.

(vi) UNILAG requires five ‘O’ level credits to include English language, Mathematics, Economics and any other Science, Social Science or Arts subject.

(vii) AUN requires Five ‘O’ level credit passes including English Language, Mathematics, and any other three subjects from the following; Economics, Geography, Government, History, Literature in English, Further Mathematics, Technical Drawing, Visual Arts, Computer Studies, Information Technology, Civics, Environmental Science, Biology, Physics, Chemistry and French.

(viii) AUN does not accept credit passes in the following; Agriculture, Food and Nutrition, Home Economics, Home Craft, Home management, Physical Education, Physical and Health Education, Music, Commerce, Accounting, Financial Accounting, Book keeping, Islamic History, Religious Studies, Tajweed, Library Studies, Diction, Kiswahili, Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, Arabic, Turkish, Study skills.

(ix) UNN requires five O’ level credits to include:
English Language, Mathematics and any other relevant subjects. For NBC the other two relevant subjects could be from any of the following: Accounting, Principles of Accounts, Commerce, Office Practice and Economics.

(x) EKSU requires credit pass in Economics plus other social Science subjects at the SSCE.

Other Requirements to Study Banking and Finance in Nigeria

Now you need to understand that beyond choosing the right JAMB subject combination for Banking and Finance, there are other requirements for admission. You must also meet the necessary O’level requirements. This means that you must have credited the necessary subjects in your SSCE in order to qualify for admission. Otherwise, you will not be offered admission.

Below is an outline of the requirements to study Banking and Finance in Nigeria:

  • Credit passes in SSCE in five (5) core subjects including English Language, Mathematics, and Economics in not more than two sittings. Some schools may require one sitting.
  • Have the correct JAMB subject combination for Banking and Finance.
  • Candidate must have attained the age of sixteen (16) by the 31st day of October in the admission year.
  • Meet the prospective school’s departmental cut off mark for Banking and Finance.

  • JUPEB certificate.
  • Two A’ level passes chosen from Accounting, Economics, Management, Mathematics, Geography and Statistics.
  • AIB, three year Diploma and other professional qualifications or HND in relevant fields plus UME requirement.
