The Nursing Profession
By way of introduction, a nurse is a healthcare professional who is trained and licensed to provide care, support and treatment to patients. He or she may attend to the patients as individuals, families or communities. Nurses play an important role in the healthcare system of any country. This is because they work alongside other healthcare professionals to promote health, prevent diseases and provide direct patient care. In fact, it is nearly impossible for a comprehensive healthcare to be delivered without the inputs of nurses. Actually, nurses are the backbone of every healthcare system because they are involved in virtually every aspect of patient care and often act as advocates for their patients.
What is Nursing?
Nursing is a profession within the healthcare sector that focuses on the care, support, and treatment of patients.
Roles and Responsibilities of Nurses
Nurses in Nigeria and other countries of the world fill a wide range of responsibilities. In this section, I will discuss some of the roles and responsibilities of nurses to help prospective nurses come to terms with what they are going into.
1. Patient Care
This is about the primary responsibility of nurses in the healthcare system. They provide direct care to patients by assessing their health status, monitoring vital signs, administering medications, dressing wounds and so on.
2. Health Promotion and Education
Nurses also play the all-important role of promoting health and preventing diseases. They do so by educating individuals and communities about healthy lifestyles, disease prevention, and other such health topics.
3. Collaborative Teamwork
Effective implementation of comprehensive healthcare plans takes the collaborative efforts of different healthcare professionals. Such team of health professionals include the doctors, pharmacists, therapists and social workers.
Nurses work collaboratively with them to develop and implement comprehensive care plans for patients. They communicate patient needs, provide valuable insights and coordinate care to ensure the best possible outcomes.
4. Advocacy
Nurses serve as advocates for their patients. They are the ones who ensure that the patients’ rights, preferences and needs are respected and met. They provide emotional support and educate patients and families about treatment options so that they can make informed decisions about their healthcare.
5. Documentation and Record-Keeping
Nurses maintain accurate records of patient care including assessments, medications and treatments given, and any changes in the patient’s condition. This documentation is absolutely necessary for continuity of care and effective communication among the healthcare team.
6. Compassion and Empathy
This is one of the essential roles of nurses. They are to demonstrate genuine empathy, compassion and concern for the well-being of their patients.
Sicknesses can put patients and their relatives through difficult times. The least the nurses can do is to provide emotional support, comfort and reassurance to patients and their families during challenging times.
Education and Training of Nurses in Nigeria
This is the central theme of this article. Prospective nurses in Nigeria obtain their education and training through accredited
- nursing schools,
- colleges, or
- universities.
However, there are different educational pathways to becoming a nurse in Nigeria. One is the Basic Nursing program which leads to the award of Registered Nurse (RN) certificate. Another is the Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNSc) program which is a five-year degree program.
Basic Nursing Program VS Bachelor of Nursing Science program: The Differences
This section will answer to the confusion that many prospective nurses are having. Many of them do not understand the difference between studying nursing in a School of Nursing and doing same in a university.
There are three categories of universities in Nigeria. They include federal, State and private universities.
Most of these universities that have faculties of Health and Medical Sciences also have departments of Nursing Sciences. In their departments of Nursing Sciences, they run five-year Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNSc) program for students who join the institution through JAMB’s UTME. These student receive their lectures and do other academic activities within the university campus.
However, most universities that have faculties of Health and Medical Sciences also establish Teaching Hospitals. Schools of Nursing and Colleges of Nursing are divisions under the Teaching Hospitals.
So while the Nursing departments in the universities’ campuses award BNSc degree, the Schools of Nursing don’t award degrees. Rather, they award Registered Nurse (RN) certificate, Registered Midwifery (RM) certificate or a series of other certificates depending on the courses attended.
Let me drive this home with an illustration.
The University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) is operating under University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) which is a federal university. While the university runs a Nursing Science degree program within the university campus, the Teaching Hospital runs the school of Nursing within the hospital complex.
Other Key Differences Between School of Nursing Program and Bachelor of Nursing Science program
- Prospective nurses who wish to go for BNSc program must gain admission into the university through JAMB’s UTME. But candidates who rather wish to go to schools of nursing do not need to write JAMB. All they need is to obtain the form of their choice Nursing school and sit for their entrance examination.
- The duration of Bachelor of Nursing Science degree program is 5 years. Whereas Registered Nurse (RN) certificate or Registered Midwifery (RM) certificate programs last for 3 years in Nursing schools.
After completing the basic programs in schools of nursing, nurses may still choose to pursue advanced degrees in various nursing specialties.
Types of Nursing Schools and Programs in Nigeria
There are several types of nursing schools and programs in Nigeria. The following is a list of some of them:
- Schools of Nursing (Basic)
- Community Nursing Programme
- Schools of Post Basic Nursing Specialties
- Community Midwifery Programme
- Schools of Midwifery (Basic/ Post Basic)
- Departments of Nursing Sciences
Admission Requirements in Schools of Nursing in Nigeria
Recall that you don’t need to write JAMB in order to gain admission into any school of nursing in Nigeria.
All you need are five (5) O’level credit passes in the following SSCE subjects: Mathematics, English Language, Physics, Chemistry and Biology at not more than two (2) sittings.
You can obtain these five O’level credit passes by sitting for any of
- West African Examination Council (WAEC)
- National Examination Council (NECO)
- National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB)
If you are a foreign student or you have results from a foreign examination board, you must submit an evaluation report. Otherwise, you submit an equivalent grading from the Federal Ministry of Education along with your result. More so, the result will still require verification from the issuing organization.
The age requirement for admission into Basic Nursing and Basic Midwifery training program is 16 years and above. This implies that any candidate who is below the age of 16 cannot be admitted into Nursing Schools.
Steps to Becoming a Registered Nurse in Nigeria
For candidates that meet the entry requirements into the schools of nursing and midwifery, the following are the steps to becoming a Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Midwife in Nigeria:
- Decide on the exact school of nursing you wish to gain admission in.
- Purchase the school of nursing application form.
- Prepare and sit for the entrance examination.
- Attend the screening and oral interview exercise.
- Gain admission to the School of Nursing.
- Graduate successfully after three years.
- Induction and licensing by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.
Regulation and Licensing of Nurses in Nigeria
The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) is the regulatory body responsible for setting standards, registering and licensing nurses and midwives in Nigeria.
They are the ones that approve and accredit all Nursing training institutions to ensure high quality of Nursing and Midwifery education in Nigeria.
To practice as a nurse in Nigeria, you must successfully complete the appropriate nursing education and pass the licensing examination conducted by the NMCN.
They conduct professional examinations for all categories of Nurses and Midwives in Nigeria and license them appropriately.

Admission Cut off Mark for Nursing
In order to have a meaningful discussion on the admission cut off mark for nursing, we need to remind ourselves again of the fact that there is a difference between nursing departments of various universities and schools of nursing.
Admission Cut off Mark for Nursing Departments
The nursing departments of various universities admit students via UTME and Direct Entry. Shortly after JAMB exams, the schools publish their cut off marks for Post UTME and later release their departmental cut of marks. The departmental cut off marks are based on the aggregate scores of the candidates. For example, through the following links, you can get…
- UNILAG Cut Off Mark for Nursing Department
- UNN Cut off Mark for Nursing Department
- FUOYE Cut Off Mark for Nursing Department
and so on.
Admission Cut off Mark for Nursing Schools
All the Nursing schools in Nigeria are under the supervision and regulation of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN). The NMCN assigns yearly admission quota to each school of nursing on account of the capacity of their facilities and personnel.
Based on admission quota and level of competition, the Nursing schools fix their admission cut off marks. For most Schools of Nursing, the admission cut off mark is above 50%.
So you must work extra hard to score well above the pass mark to increase your chances of admission.
Job and Career Opportunities for Graduates of Schools of Nursing
Registered Nurses and Midwives have diverse career opportunities both in Nigeria and abroad. They can work in hospitals, clinics, primary healthcare centers, community health centers, schools, industries, research institutions, and various public and private healthcare settings.
