Importance of Choosing the right Subjects in JAMB
JAMB gives candidates the privilege to choose the four subjects they’d be tested on in the UTME examination. Of course, like every other choice people make in life, the choice of subject combinations has consequences.
Therefore, it is crucial that candidates know the importance of choosing the right subjects in JAMB. Here are the reasons why you need to choose the correct JAMB subjects for your prospective course:
1. Course Eligibility
Different courses at the university level require specific combinations of subjects in JAMB. This implies that only the candidates that choose the right subjects for their prospective courses are eligible for admission. So, if you make the mistake of choosing the wrong subjects in JAMB for a particular course, you will never gain admission in that course regardless of your score in UTME.
You may need to scroll up this post to check the right JAMB subjects for your prospective course. Apart from Use of English, find out whether some other subjects are compulsory and fill them appropriately in your JAMB form.
2. Admission Consideration
I’ve already said this in the section above, but I need to repeat for the sake of emphasis. Universities and other tertiary institutions often consider your four JAMB subjects when reviewing the applications they receive. If you choose subjects that align with the requirements of your prospective course, you are more likely to be considered for admission, every other thing being equal.
3. Competitive Advantage
I’ve said over and over that the admission spaces available in all Nigerian tertiary institutions are grossly inadequate compared to the number of candidates seeking admission. The implication is that admission search in Nigeria is highly competitive. And you don’t need any form of guessing or mistakes when filling your JAMB form or at any other point in your admission search. If you choose the wrong subject combination for your prospective course, you give other candidates advantage over you. You will automatically not be part of those competing for the limited number of spaces available for your course.

4. Personal Strengths and Interests
For some courses, only Use of English is compulsory. This implies that candidates going for such courses have the right or opportunity of choose the remaining three subjects.
For some other subjects, Use of English and one other subject are compulsory. This also implies that candidates going for such courses have the opportunity to choose any other two subjects as they like.
If your course is one of such courses, it is important that you consider your own strengths and interests when choosing your JAMB subjects. Select the subjects you enjoy and naturally excel in so that you can increase your chances of scoring high in the UTME.
Alright.
That’s a wrap.
